The Department of Public Works is HIRING! Opportunities currently available for Maintenance Technician I. This position is responsible for maintenance and construction work for the city. Work of this nature involves performance of the more difficult manual construction and maintenance activities associated with the City of Portage properties, city streets, sewers, parks and cemeteries from April to October. In late fall the position transitions to operation of heavy-duty trucks for leaf pick-up and snow removal. Prefer prior experience in snow plowing, building trades, mowing, and road repairs. Experience operating a dump truck with under-body blade is helpful.

Valid Michigan Class "A" CDL with air brakes, tanker endorsement, and DOT medical card preferred. Michigan Class "B" CDL required and would require CDL-A obtained within 6 months. Public Works will assist this position in obtaining a Michigan Class "A" CDL with air brakes, tanker endorsement, and DOT medical card after 3 months. Must possess a high school diploma or general education degree (GED). Applicants must be able to lift objects and tools over 50 pounds and work under adverse weather conditions. Demonstrated work ethic is desired. Good driving record is required as well as the ability to pass a background check and drug/alcohol screen if offered a position.

Starting rate is $18.75/hour, based on experience. Excellent benefits package. Overtime required certain months of the year for the City Leaf Clean-up program and Winter Street Maintenance with night/weekend shift requirements. Adjusted work schedule of 3:30 AM -1200 PM or 12:00 PM -8:30 PM for winter street maintenance with potential of 12 AM start time for first shift or 12 AM end time for second shift as weather dictates. Future opportunities for advancement based on seniority and skill set under UAW Contract.
