City Of Pomona is Hiring a Building Permit Technician I Near Pomona, CA

We're on the lookout for a Building Permit Technician I to join our newly re-organized team. Since our transformation in December 2022, we're moving from contract services to in-house positions, offering a more integrated and efficient service to our community.
As a Building Permit Technician I, you'll be at the forefront of our customer service operations. You'll have the opportunity to engage with the public directly, process vital information for building and construction permits, and contribute to streamlining the development review processes. Your role is crucial in ensuring that reliable and accurate information is provided to our thriving community.

  • A 4% salary increase effective from October 1, 2024.
  • Another 4% raise on October 1, 2025.

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Education & Experience: 
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Two years of administrative support experience.
License or Certificate:
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Possession of, or must obtain, International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Permit Technician within 12 months of employment.

  • Provide quality customer service to the public at the building counter and over the telephone; process building permits and applications; respond to inquiries and/or permit discrepancies; provide information regarding permit procedures, policies, and functions.

  • Assist in establishing counter procedures. Assist in establishing reliable permit coordination among City departments and the business community. Serve as a resource to direct the public as needed to various sources of information including other divisions and departments. 

  • Check proof of ownership and deeds. Receive, log, and route building plans; verify plan check status. Issue building permits for projects; calculate and collect fees in accordance with established fee schedules; reconcile daily fee collections.

  • Verify final inspection clearance with all City requirements including certificates of occupancy. 

  • Assemble files and other related material to facilitate report preparation by supervisory staff. Maintain building division records including building activity reports, building evaluations, and fee collection summaries. 

  • Create public brochures to assist applicants with the permit process and code requirements. 

  • Prepare various procedural reports for supervisory staff. 

  • Conduct minor plan checks. 

  • Enter, store, and retrieve data on a computer.

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Special Requirements: Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to work in a standard office environment; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
