Community Education and Outreach Coordinator

Program Overview

The Health Department’s Community Outreach and Education Coordinator is a position that seeks to reduce the frequency of fatal opioid overdoses through engaging with community members and providing the tools and knowledge needed to respond to opioid overdoses and other medical emergencies.

Job Requirements

The Community Outreach and Education Coordinator is an employee of the New Orleans Health Department who is responsible for the coordination of the department’s Bystander Response educational program, which includes three separate trainings: Overdose Response, Stop the Bleed, and Hands-Only CPR. The trainings can be offered independently or in any combination. The Program Coordinator is responsible for the implementation and administration of the program, management and coordination of partner relationships, and coordination of trainings. The Project Coordinator reports to the Opioid Special Projects Coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will:

· Have two years of experience working in a behavioral health or public health setting,

· Be comfortable interacting with persons from various backgrounds,

· Have experience working in the public sector and operating across sectors,

· Be familiar with the issues related to opioid use and misuse in New Orleans,

· Have two years of experience successfully engaging stakeholders in shaping social or behavioral health services at the community level, and

· Possess a Bachelor’s Degree, at a minimum, and preferably an advanced degree in a field related to behavioral health or social services.

· Possess a valid driver’s license.

DUTIES

Bystander Response Training

· Plan, promote, and conduct one to three Bystander Response trainings per week

· Coordinate time and location with site administrators

· Work with New Orleans EMS to coordinate Bystander Response trainings requested via the NOLA Ready website

· Transport training materials to training site

· Maintain and update training materials as necessary, for a variety of audiences and populations

Distribution of Naloxone and Coordination of Outreach

· Arrange for the purchase and distribution of naloxone

· Coordinate Behavioral Health team’s weekly naloxone distribution outreach to areas with high rates of overdose

· Participate in community events to promote the program and distribute Narcan

Public Safety

· Arrange for purchase of sharps containers

· Coordinate placement of sharps containers

· Coordinate maintenance of sharps containers (i.e. timely emptying and proper disposal of contents)

Program Administration

· Program planning and implementation

o Ensure that the project is implemented as planned and redirected if needed

o Project coordinator will identify the needs of the community (including collecting and analyzing administrative and overdose data)

o Design and implement appropriate outreach and prevention strategies based on the data

o Craft and modify program policies and forms

· Coordinate requests for programmatic supplies

· Collect and review program data

· Manage relationships with stakeholders, program partners and advisory groups

o Write periodic updates/reports

o Meet with representatives from partner agencies as needed

· Research funding opportunities for program sustainability

  • Make referrals to treatment providers as needed

Community Meetings

Represent and promote program and NOHD through attendance and participation in relevant community meetings, including NOHD’s Community Health Improvement harm reduction planning meetings.

New Orleans Health Department:

(As an NOHD employee, the Outreach and Education Coordinator will participate in regular staff meetings, trainings and department-wide activities.)

· Weekly meeting with NOHD supervisor

· Staff and/or Programmatic meetings

· Public health trainings

· Emergency preparedness trainings and exercises

· Meet with NOHD collaborators as needed

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $50,000.00 per year
