City of Milwaukie is Hiring a Seasonal Maintenance Worker Near Milwaukie, OR

The City has an excellent opportunity for motivated and energetic candidates to learn new skills and get experience in the utilities and maintenance fields. We will be filling a number of temporary positions in the Natural Resources, Streets and Water divisions from this recruitment. These are full-time roles working Monday through Friday.In the natural resources division, you will help maintain the city’s urban forest and green infrastructure! This position will be doing hands-on work outdoors with Milwaukie’s natural resources team and working on a variety of landscaping projects, including raingarden and detention pond maintenance, invasive species removal, urban forest work such as pruning, watering and planting trees, and making other improvements Milwaukie’s natural spaces and public greenspaces.In the streets division, you will assist with crack sealing, vegetation removal, barricade maintenance, emptying downtown garbage cans, filling potholes, vehicle maintenance and road should maintenance. Most work is performed in public right of way, in low traffic areas.In the water division, you will assist water system flushing from fire hydrants and blow offs, fire hydrant painting and maintenance, meter reads, vegetation removal, warehouse cleaning and vehicle maintenance. (Tasks listed are intended to be descriptive and not restrictive. An employee in this classification may perform any of the tasks listed; however, these examples do not include all the tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.) 

  1. Uses a variety of hand and power-operated tools and equipment such as shovels, picks, hand and small riding mowers, power hacksaw, drills, jackhammer, and weed whackers.
  2. Maintains streets, water, and stormwater infrastructure within the right-of-way.
  3. Assists with street repairs, asphalt raking, barricade repair, sign and maintenance.
  4. Assists in mapping of utility infrastructure.
  5. Performs water quality system flushing and maintenance on water meters and fire hydrants.
  6. Assists in locating sewer, storm and water lines for other utilities.
  7. Maintains green infrastructure including rain gardens, detention ponds, and trees through best vegetation and arboricultural management practices including weed and brush removal.
  8. Prepares and maintains electronic logs and records of daily work activity including time, materials, and equipment utilized through asset management software.
  9. Assists in response to public inquiries and service requests in a courteous and timely manner; evaluates complaints by on-site inspection. Provides information within scope of knowledge or refers to other staff.
  10. Maintains positive public relations with customers and is responsive to customer needs.
  11. Develops safe work habits and contributes to the safety of self, co-workers and the general public.
Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Basic construction and repair methods and procedures.
  • Safety practices and procedures applicable to assigned tools and work area.
  • Power tools used in maintenance operations.

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Work as a team member.
  • Provide internal and external customer service.

Required Education, Training and Experience

(Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties of this position. Prior work experience and educational requirements listed are typical ways of obtaining the required qualifications. Other equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.) 

  • High school degree or GED; AND
  • Six months of manual labor, maintenance, construction, or landscaping experience; OR
  • Some college coursework in the field of interest. 
Licensing/Special Requirements:
  • Valid driver license and acceptable driving history.
