Job Description
Under general supervision, the Community Service Specialist (CSS) is a non-sworn employee assigned to the Police Department who reports to either sworn officers of any rank or non-sworn supervisory employees.
Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine, non-hazardous work at the Police Department and in the field, provides and acquires information, makes reports, performs crime prevention duties, issuance of police supplies and auxiliary police duties.
Job Responsibilities
1. Responds to citizen inquiries and requests for police services regarding criminal and civil matters, traffic accidents and miscellaneous incidents requiring police action.
2. Refers citizens to other public agencies, gives directions and provides general assistance.
3. Distinguishes criminal from non-criminal conduct as required in designated role.
4. Prepares and maintains various records and statistical reports.
5. Prepares crime, traffic and miscellaneous reports.
6. Performs vehicle checks.
7. Conducts abandoned auto investigations and impounds abandoned vehicles.
8. Inspects properties at the request of vacationing residents.
9. Inspects businesses and residences upon request to determine susceptibility to criminal attack and recommends security precautions.
10. Participates in crime prevention education activities and conducts meetings to community groups.
11. Orders and maintains supplies, as well as patrol supplies (i.e. shotguns, radios, vehicles, etc.).
12. Provides crowd control assistance.
13. Services subpoenas.
14. Assists detectives, traffic and patrol officers as directed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum Requirements - 1.Job requires an accredited high school diploma or GED equivalent.
2.Must have experience in a position requiring public contact; a combination of education and / or experience in law enforcement related areas preferred, but not required.
3.Must be a minimum of 18 years of age upon appointment,
4.Job requires a valid, current Texas Class C Drivers License.
5.Must be able to type a minimum of 20 words a minute with minimal error.
7.Must use tact and courtesy in all situations.
Physical Requirements
Occasionally drives a patrol car, and will stop and stand to direct traffic or check doors of business establishmentsand residences to see that they are secure.
Sits at desk and writes or dictates information for reports. Must berequired to stand for long periods in the performances of duties.
Must be able to withstand inclement weather andphysical work as a foot patrolOfficer.
Additional Information
May consist of a physical exam, drug screening and psychological exam.
