Job Description
Under general direction, the employee assists patrons with updating contact information, card problems, overdue fines and other library related matters.
Employee also prepares recurring reports, records, and assembles information from more than one source. This position involves general library work, assisting all departments as assigned and scheduled to meet the service demands and staffing levels of the branch library.
Job Responsibilities
1. Checks library materials in and out at the Circulation Desk and is a point of contact for overdue problems and complaints.
2. Enters data into the computerized circulation system, registers borrowers, handles cash transactions, and assists the public in the computer lab.
3. Helps patrons locate library materials and provides reference assistance using various print and electronic sources including the internet;
assists patrons at the Children’s Department, with programs, special projects, and other activities.
4. Registers borrowers for library cards, performs data entry of patron information into computer, handles lost or stolen card problems, changes of address, and incorrect address problems.
5. Responds to and initiates Inter-Library and Intra-System Loan requests from main and branch libraries and prepares materials for patron pick-up and for return to lending libraries.
6. Handles reservation requests from patrons and schedules study rooms. 8. Assists the professional librarians with tours, regularly recurring programs and special library activities such as the summer reading program and story hour / craft activities.
7. Prepares monthly calendar, booklists, etc., and decoration in the branch.
8. Assists patrons with research problems, sometimes requesting books / information from the main library and outside agencies through Inter-Library Loan and on-line sources.
9. Performs clerical work such as data entry, filing, checking bibliographies and other work as necessary.
10. Answers incoming calls for Branch and welcomes visitors while assisting at a service desk.
11. Assists in ensuring compliance with library opening and closing procedures.
12. Directs patrons to appropriate branch and main library departments.
13. Assists other library staff as needed and performs other job-related duties as required with a cheerful and cooperative attitude.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum Requirements - 1. Job requires an accredited high school diploma or GED equivalent. Two years of college preferred.
2. No previous experience is necessary.
3. Job requires a current, Texas Class C driver’s license.
4. Must have sufficient knowledge of library work with emphasis providing circulation assistance.
5. Bilingual (English / Spanish) preferred.
6. Some artistic and / or crafts aptitude and experience preferred.
7. Must exercise tact and diplomacy in handling complaints and problems resulting from overdue notices.
8. Must be able to operate general office equipment (i.e. computer, audio-visual equipment, public access catalog, internet access computer, and cash register).
Physical Requirements
1. Physical effort limited to lifting up to 20-30 lbs.
2. Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned building; Duties involve standing and walking.
Additional Information
1. This position is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
2.This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
3. Work may include working evening and / or weekend hours.
