City of Madison, WI is Hiring a Parking Enforcement Officer Near Madison, WI

General Description

This is responsible uniformed work in the enforcement of City parking ordinances for the Parking Division. Working under the limited supervision of the Parking Enforcement Supervisor, employees are assigned walking or driving beats to enforce overtime violations, illegal parking, improper use of special permits and related violations. Work involves considerable judgment and discretion in taking enforcement actions and/or providing related information/clarifications. Employees also identify abandoned or stolen vehicles, and vehicles with outstanding warrants and initiate appropriate action to include towing/impoundment. Work involves performing a variety of standard recordkeeping and reporting activities.
**In order to be considered for this opportunity, candidates must be willing to work nights and weekends**

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

Interpret and enforce all parking regulations within an assigned area

  • Issue parking citations to motor vehicles and/or engage in related informational efforts to achieve compliance
  • Impound vehicles as required
  • Facilitate towing services and provide owner/operator liaison as required
  • Assist with disabled fraud investigations: identify possible suspects/suspect vehicles
  • Respond to radio dispatch calls regarding parking violations and parking complaints
  • Assist with special assignments when necessary
Public Relations
  • Respond to issues, concerns, and complaints related to Parking Enforcement
  • Assist community members in locating stolen, towed, or lost vehicles
  • Respond to the parking enforcement needs of construction/residents/commuters in order to maintain the safe flow of traffic and pedestrians
  • Answer inquiries and give directions to the general public.
  • Provide public information/clarification regarding parking ordinances and policies of the City and department.
Record Keeping
  • Enter, retrieve, and compile computer information pertaining to vehicle registration
  • Observe and record down/missing street signs and other hazardous street conditions or traffic accidents
  • Document any vehicle damage and towing locations and distribute copies as appropriate
  • Complete related reports
  • Respond to subpoenas from City Attorney’s Office and testify in court on parking issues, specific violations or fraud cases.
Special Events
  • Work special events and liaison with organizers to post temporary signage and enforce parking regulations pursuant to the special events
  • Interact safely with crowds while accomplishing specialized goals related to the special events/assignments.
  • Enforce parking restrictions and assist with no parking issues for special events (football, commencement, marathons, etc.)
Miscellaneous
  • Maintain City of Madison equipment and vehicles used for daily assignments (e.g., check oil, gas, etc.)
  • Report mechanical problems promptly to ensure safe operation of assigned vehicles
  • Participate in training of new hires
  • Support any Parking Division and Transportation Department initiatives
  • Perform related work as required

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of experience of direct public contact communicating or explaining organizational policies and procedures to the general public.

OR

Associate's degree or higher.

Familiarity with:

  • Principles, practices, and terminology applicable to enforcing the City's parking ordinances and regulations.
  • Computer software applicable to the duties of the position.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver's license.
Hours will vary, to include weekend, day, evening, and night shifts, as well as Special Events.
Physical Requirements:

This position requires a high percentage of work outdoors in all types of weather at various times of day and night while driving, walking, standing, and performing repetitive arm movements when marking vehicles. Employees will be required to frequently get in and out of vehicles. In addition, employees may be required to walk extended distances, up to 10 miles on a given shift, in all types of weather, when enforcing parking. Occasionally, employees may be expected to carry materials weighing up to 20 pounds and may have to bend, lift, reach, and pound signs as necessary.
