The Public Works Department is actively seeking two (2) Fleet Preventive Maintenance Technicians. City of Jacksonville employees are also eligible for Federal Student Loan Forgiveness after ten (10) years of public service and on-time payments.This is service maintenance work at a skilled level in inspecting and performing preventive maintenance on heavy vehicles including compressed natural gas vehicles. The work requires knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures used to service heavy equipment and compressed natural gas vehicles as well as the ability to perform preventive maintenance services which is learned on the job or through specialized training. Contacts require basic courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others, and includes contacts to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. The work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by procedures or precedents, but some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate method, technique, or procedure to follow. The work involves differing situations requiring use of judgment and search for solutions or new applications within ones known experiences. Work is performed both in a service garage environment and in the field where there are some risks and hazards are substantial, but are known, somewhat predictable and mostly controllable. Operates motor vehicles and uses equipment and tools necessary for performing preventive maintenance on heavy vehicles and compressed natural gas vehicles. Physical demands consist of bending, walking, standing, sitting, reaching, and lifting or moving objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. Work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are varied, and the worker is permitted some latitude to set priorities subject to supervisor’s approval.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Performs preventive maintenance such as changing hydraulic, transmission and engine oils and filters; checking and replacing lights to ensure proper functioning; visually inspecting and changing belts, hoses, and wiper blades; draining and replacing fluids in coolant systems; and checking brake pads, fluid levels/leaks, safety equipment, etc. on heavy equipment.Performs preventive maintenance on compressed natural gas vehicles.Conducts preventive maintenance inspections of hydraulic equipment.Performs diagnosis in field to determine whether major or minor repairs are needed.Operates automotive, heavy equipment, and compressed natural vehicle vehicles to move for service.Communicates with City agencies to set appointments for equipment service and/or repair.Determines which parts are needed through visual inspections and reviewing manuals. or computerized records.Inspects and changes pre-mounted tires and rims.May travel to equipment located throughout the City to inspect and perform preventive maintenance.Writes service requests.Operates a two-way radio.Prepares and maintains records on jobs.Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.Performs related work as required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
One (1) year of education and/or experience in performing preventive maintenance on vehicles. One (1) year of experience in servicing heavy vehicles - preferred. Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds - required. LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class. Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver. Depending on assignment, must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License and maintain same during employment in this class. Depending on assignment, must complete NGV Technician and Fleet Operations Safety Training and CNG Fueling Station Operation and Maintenance Training.OTHER REQUIREMENTS: The probationary period for this class is six (6) months. This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment, random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville's Drug Free Workplace Policy (0401).A FULLY COMPLETED ONLINE APPLICATION IS REQUIRED.
