Under the direction of the Licensed Water Plant Operator, performs a variety of duties related to the operation of the treatment plant during the assigned shift. Duties include, but are not limited to routine preventative maintenance on equipment, general housekeeping, inventory of chemicals, collecting water samples from City residents and businesses, and treatment of some solid waste.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB TASKS: (Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions)

1. Monitors the performance of equipment, gauges and charts, records statistical data
2. Complete jar testing as needed
3. Checks and records information and takes corrective action on routine or reoccurring problems
4. Performs routine tests on influent and effluent samples; informs supervisor of any changes in chemical characteristics
5. Treatment of solids in the solids handling facility
6. Performs various maintenance tasks such as replacing seals and bearings; adjusting fittings; and cleaning tanks, screens, basins, equipment and the like
7. Performs quality control tests, assuring utility system operates within standards
8. Receives after hour calls when City Hall is closed. Dispatches the appropriate organization (Street crew, Wastewater Plant, or Repair Crew) from a provided call-in list in order to have situation resolved
9. Provides supervision and training to other operators/trainees as directed
10. Assures adherence to good housekeeping practices at the work site
11. Completes payroll timesheets
12. Responsible for maintaining MDE/OSHA Standards
13. Grease pumps and change oil
14. Inspect water towers and maintain grounds.

16. Performs other duties as assigned

• Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to noise, fumes, or airborne particles, risk or electrical shock and vibration
• The work involves working with toxic or caustic chemicals
• Work requires the use of respiratory and other proper protective equipment
• Incumbent works on a rotating on-call schedule

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of City policies, laws and regulations
• A working knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices 
• Ability to work in a team environment, and foster effective relationships within and outside the Department
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing, use a personal computer, telephone, and standard office equipment
• Must possess a valid Maryland driver’s license
• Incumbent must be capable of lifting 50 pounds
• This position regularly involves walking, standing, stooping, bending, and climbing
• Ability to pass an annual physical examinations, including pulmonary function tests

Education and Experience:

• Possession of a high school diploma or GED
• Any equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable
• A working knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices
• Obtain a Class 4A Water Treatment Plan Certificate
