Position Function:

Under the direction of the Fire Chief, performs assigned duties necessary to enforce fire codes, perform fire inspections, conduct fire education programs, and promote overall fire prevention efforts within the City.

Essential Functions:

  1. Performs assigned duties necessary to enforce fire codes and perform fire inspections, conduct fire education programs, and promote overall fire prevention efforts within the City. Duties include but are not limited to, fire code enforcement, inspections, investigations, and plan review to ensure the enforcement of City Ordinances, State building codes, and NFPA codes related to all residential and commercial (new and/or existing) structures, and fire suppression infrastructure (e.g. pumps, hoses, hydrants, equipment, etc.). Responsible for developing and conducting routine inspection processes and procedures, the issuance of permits and citations, and managing fire inspection personnel.
  2. Responsible to perform duties necessary to develop, plan and conduct various fire prevention and safety educational programs (e.g. residential Knox box, smoke detector, youth, fire extinguisher, etc.). Duties include coordinating a fire prevention week and open house and identifying specific needs to address within the community.
  3. Provides technical assistance to and coordination with the Fire Chief, Building Inspections and Code Enforcement Divisions, developers, engineers, architects, and citizens to ensure all life safety codes are met and enforced. Duties include the preparation and dissemination of reports. Responsible for appropriate records retention and Open Records request fulfillment.
  4. Responsible for assisting the Fire Chief with planning, preparing, and monitoring the Department budget, including analyses and recommendations regarding operational, personnel, and equipment requirements.
  5. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Environment:

Duties are performed primarily within an outdoor and inspections environment or setting. Exposure to noise, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, smoke, fire, electricity, toxic or caustic chemicals and/or fumes, mechanical and/or moving parts, high elevations, vibration, blood-borne pathogens, viruses, disease, confined space entry, dangerous buildings and the like commonly associated with fire inspection duties.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Required knowledge and experience are normally obtained through the completion of an advanced education from an accredited educational institution of higher learning resulting in a Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science, or a related field. Master's Degree preferred.

  • Must be able to communicate and present oneself professionally, and have the ability to successfully work with confidential information.
  • Thorough knowledge of commercial operations and related potential hazards.
  • Thorough knowledge of Florida Building Codes, NFPA Standards, and City ordinances.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of fire prevention and safety education, and fire suppression methods, practices, and principles.
  • Ability to work under high demands, shot time constraints, and pressure in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to remain up-to-date on Federal, State, and City regulations, and Occupational Health and Safety standards to implement best practices and policies affecting department activities.
  • Ability to enforce codes and regulations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with City and other public employees, public officials, contractors, consultants, businesses, and the general public.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Officer (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).

Other Requirements:

  • Must pass post-offer pre-employment Physical Examination and applicable background checks.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
