City of Grand Rapids is Hiring a Hydraulic Engineer Near Grand Rapids, MI

 The purpose of this job is to manage staff and information to ensure that the City's public water and sewer utilities and private utility services are designed appropriately to serve the needs of the customers. Evaluates existing water and sewer utilities and records and provides guidance. Acts as a working engineer on Hydraulic System Models, Plan Reviews, Asset Management of Systems and Facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Communicates information regarding City utilities and services to City staff, engineers, consultants, developers, contractors, and customers to ensure adherence to standards and codes
  • Performs and coordinates the review of public utility extensions or improvements to water, sanitary sewer, or storm sewer systems. Provides guidance to staff regarding private connection issues
  • Provides assistance with troubleshooting a variety of problems and issues
  • Directs, schedules, manages, oversees, and evaluates project engineers and engineering assistants
  • Participates in Rate Study data gathering, calculations, and reporting
  • Evaluates and provides recommendations and guidance on capital improvement projects
  • Participates in asset management and evaluation of condition and capacity of water and sewer utilities. 
  • Assists the Assistant Manager for Utility Engineering and Asset Planning in prioritizing projects for capital replacement
  • Reviews and evaluates utility records
  • Assists the Assistant Manager for Utility Engineering and Asset Planning to ensure records are properly recorded in the various databases, ensures accessibility to data, and resolves issues in historical data
  • Performs related work as required

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Hydraulic or related Engineering field 
--AND--
  • At least five (5) years of experience in professional engineering related to water or wastewater systems or closely related work, including supervisory experience
--OR--
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Professional Engineering License
Preferred Licenses or Certifications
  • State of Michigan S-2 Operator License
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of basic bookkeeping
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
  • City's utilities and system requirements, rules and regulations and codes
  • Professional hydraulic engineering principles, practices and methods
  • Design principles, strength of materials, and stress analysis required in planning construction projects and water and/or wastewater system improvements
  • Construction and zoning standards and regulations relating to water and/or wastewater systems
  • Effective supervisory practices and techniques
  • Ten states Standards for Utilities
  • Civil Engineering
  • Hydraulics capacity and modeling
  • Staff positions and responsibilities
  • Labor rules, disciplinary procedures and staffing requirements
  • City’s information systems
  • Utility Asset Management
Skill in:
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships 
  • Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature
  • Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios

  • Prepare reports of a complex technical nature
