    NATURE OF WORK:
    Using strong independent judgement, the Safety Manager oversees daily safety operations and creates a safe environment for library users of all ages and library staff. Areas of responsibility
    include implementing safety-related policies and procedures, training staff, supervising safety staff, responding to requests for safety assistance and emergencies, investigating and following up with
    incidents, securing the library facility and exterior property, and assisting with development of emergency response procedures and disaster response planning.
    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):
    Oversees overall safety operations and public safety services under the direction of the Administration
    Ensures a departmental climate that offers library patrons courteous and respectful service
    Proactively collaborates with library staff and outside agencies, such as social workers, mental health professionals, and law enforcement and emergency responders, to anticipate, prevent, and respond to serious or emergency situations
    Works with staff to provide information, support, referrals, and assistance to people who are experiencing mental health issues, addiction, homelessness, or issues of general exclusion or disengagement
    Works with library staff to prevent and manage incidents occurring on library property, including preparing and reviewing written incident reports and completing necessary follow-up on incidents
    Facilitates and participates in daily safety meetings with library staff
    Issues and manages suspensions of individuals in collaboration with other library staff as needed based on the library’s policy on the enforcement of library use rules and notice of suspension
    Oversees hiring, supervision, training, development, scheduling, and evaluation of safety staff
    Recommends policies, practices, and services for daily operation and special events which maximize a safe and secure environment for people and library property Develops and implements Library Safety Plan
    Prepares and ensures presentation of safety and security related training to all library staff, including emergency preparedness and response
    Regularly communicates updates, concerns, and suggestions with library director and others in administration and management
    Participates in decision-making; identifies and offers solutions to problems and needs of the department in relation to total library services, the goals of other departments, and the needs of the community
    Collaborates with members of administration and senior management team to ensure successful library operations and collaborates with other library departments on library projects and initiatives
    Works with administration on updates to library policies
    Meaningfully contributes to the library’s strategic goals through committees and work groups
    Works with colleagues, including Data Analysis Coordinator, to analyze statistics and generate reports for administration review
    Pursues relevant knowledge of library and other related industries (e.g. safety, social work, technology)
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
    Must possess a college degree with some coursework in security/social work related fields and must possess three (3) or more years of supervisory work experience. Minimum three years of
    experience working in public safety or social services
    Must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

    Ability to learn state and local laws related to library safety
    Ability to use extensive workplace technology including word processing, spreadsheet, database applications, and software including, but not limited to,
    Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.), Google, and Adobe Acrobat Professional, internet, intranet, hands free communication devices (Vocera),
    CCTV surveillance software, and mobile smartphone
    Understanding of, and commitment to, library values and ethics (ex. confidentiality/privacy, intellectual freedom)
    Demonstrated ability to:

    collaborate with staff at all levels

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Experience with and knowledge of social work and social services available in the Evanston and Skokie area
    CPI-certified or equivalent nonviolent crisis intervention training
    Experience with mental health first aid, trauma-informed practices
    Experience working in or with public libraries
    Preferred Competencies:
    Organizational and project management skills
    Bilingual skills in English plus another language relevant to the Skokiecommunity
    Demonstrated ability to gather and use meaningful data in decision making process
    Other Job Functions:
    Performs essential job functions of safety guard as needed
    Provides support to the building services staff as needed
    May serve on library committees and task forces
    Regular and punctual attendance
    Serves as LIC as needed
    Performs other related duties as assigned
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

    Scheduling may require availability during any library operating hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and occasionally when the library is closed. Although a weekly schedule is established, the needs of the library may require scheduling changes and flexibility.
    Constant navigation of library property
    Ability to perform office-related functions including extended concentration on a computer and typing capability
    Work may include prolonged sitting, standing, stooping, bending, lifting/moving materials, getting down on the floor
    Manual dexterity, clear speech, hearing acuity, and correctable vision are required
    Noise level is generally moderate though some areas can be loud on occasion
    Employee required to park in designated areas
    Work in all types of weather

    SUPERVISION:
    Under the general direction of the Executive Director or designee, work is performed with independence; works closely with City officials and Library staff at all levels of the organization.
    Assignments are received via work requests, e-mails, phone calls, questions, meetings and direct project and ongoing assignments from the Executive Director; employee is responsible for
    prioritizing work tasks, and for identifying, including, referring and coordinating the appropriate City staff within or outside of the Department in order to resolve a problem or situation. Additionally;
    this position is responsible to review and oversee staff assigned to the safety and security positions. Projects are developed through the Safety Plan process in conjunction with the
    Executive Director, and Board of Trustees; employee is responsible for prioritizing projects and work tasks, assigning workload to staff, periodic reporting of progress, monitoring project budgets,
    identification of problems and potential resolutions. Work is reviewed through observation, completion of projects, status reports, conferences and meetings with the senior management
    staff members of the Library. Guidance is provided through City Code, Library policies, City operating practices and procedures, Personnel Manual, Purchasing Manual, applicable
    ordinances, statutes, codes and rules. Work is evaluated formally at least annually, with respect to supervisory skills, project management, adherence to deadlines and budget, ability to work with
    consultants, contractors and City officials, problem solving ability, customer service, project delivery, written and verbal communications, leadership skills, and performance in accordance with the classification standard.
    PUBLIC CONTACT:
    The employee has significant contact with other department employees, supervisors, contractors, consultants, outside vendors and dealers to resolve problems and improve safety and security methods.
