The City of Coronado is Accepting Applications for the 
Lifeguard Assistant (Beach)
The City of Coronado is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Lifeguard Assistant (Beach). This position provides general assistance and support to the Beach Lifeguard Division; assists in the Junior Lifeguard and Surf Awareness programs; prevents accidents and enforces beach regulations; assists in the maintenance of facilities and equipment; and performs a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
This is a part-time, seasonal (not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year) position that does not include benefits.
 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:
1. Assists in the Junior Lifeguard and Surf Awareness programs by providing extra supervision during beach activities, serving as lifeguards for students in water events and providing assistance to the instructors and students
2. Provides general assistance in observing swimmers.
3. Greets and assists the general public; provides information; responds to, resolves or directs inquiries and complaints to appropriate staff.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Provides minor first aid; assists in CPR, if necessary.
2. Maintains lifeguard and rescue equipment; ensures that appropriate equipment and supplies are available for classes and events; sets up and takes down equipment.
3. Performs a variety of general and routine administrative tasks in support of lifeguarding programs; operates office equipment to perform tasks including computers and supporting software applications, copiers, fax machines and telephones.
4. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: At least two (2) years in a junior lifeguard program, high school program/sport such as water polo or swimming, or equivalent is desirable.
Education/Training: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of an appropriate, valid American Red Cross C.P.R. for the Professional Rescuer certificate. Possession of an appropriate, valid American Red Cross Emergency Medical Response certificate.
Knowledge of:
Methods and techniques of first aid and CPR.
Ability to:
  • Provide general assistance and support to assigned lifeguard programs and activities.
  • Set up and take down equipment for programs and events.
  • Learn rules and equipment used in various lifeguarding activities.
  • Learn methods and techniques of first aid and CPR.
  • Learn appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area of assignment.
  • Deal tactfully and effectively with the general public.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Examination Process
Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of relevant training and experience. Qualified candidates will be contacted and invited to participate in a testing process consisting of a written test (pass/fail) and 500-meter open ocean buoy swim in under ten minutes (pass/fail) and an oral interview (pass/fail). Candidates must pass each section to move on to the next portion of the testing.

Tryouts will be held at the Main Lifeguard Tower located at 920 Ocean Boulevard, Coronado, CA 92118.
All appointments are subject to a successful completion of a background check, and pre-employment physical examination which includes a drug screening. Mobility: Incumbents are required to participate in assigned lifeguarding activities which may include swimming, light to moderate lifting; standing, walking or running for prolonged periods of time.
Vision: Vision sufficient to distinguish objects at a distance of no less than 100 yards and distinguish color.
Environment: Incumbents are required to work at a public beach and are exposed to inclement weather conditions often with insufficient protection from the sun; work in ocean water.
Other Factors: Incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.
