The City is currently accepting applications for Seasonal Maintenance Assistant in the Fleet, Streets, and Facilities Division of the Public Services & Engineering Department. This is a temporary, non-benefited position (not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year). These part-time positions are currently available in the Public Services & Engineering Department and are typically scheduled between 18-20 hours per week.Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.Under supervision (Seasonal Maintenance Assistant I), or Seasonal Maintenance Assistant II is to provide general assistance for a limited period of time in support of assigned operations including, but not limited to, general manual labor and maintenance and repair duties for various City facilities including the beach, sidewalks, streets, parks, golf courses, sewers, and storm drains.CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
Seasonal Maintenance Assistant I: 
This is the entry-level class in the limited term Seasonal Maintenance Assistant series. This class is distinguished from the Seasonal Maintenance Assistant II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Advancement to the "II" level is based on demonstrated proficiency in performing the assigned functions, and is at the discretion of higher level supervisory or management staff.Seasonal Maintenance Assistant II: This is the full journey level class within the limited term Seasonal Maintenance Assistant series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Seasonal Maintenance Assistant I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned including general maintenance, construction, and repair of City parks, beaches, golf course, wastewater, streets, and related buildings and facilities. Employees at this level receive limited instruction or assistance, and are aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following tasks are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these tasks and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here:
1. Perform limited term general manual labor supporting the maintenance and repair of various City facilities including the beach, sidewalks, streets, parks, golf courses, sewers and storm drains.
2. Perform general beach maintenance functions; clean restrooms, pick up trash and debris, clear walk ways and stairs, rake sand and clean fire pits.
3. Perform sewer and storm drain maintenance functions; operate a vactor, rodder and video camera; participate in the repair sewer pumps; read and interpret gas gauges.
4. Perform general parks maintenance functions; operate a variety of groundskeeping power equipment and hand tools including tractors, mowers, weed eaters, chemical sprayers, dump trucks, backhoes and power blowers.
5. Plant, water and maintain landscaped areas including turf, bushes, trees, flowers and shrubs; trim and prune bushes, trees and shrubs; stake trees as necessary; water, mow, weed, renovate and aerate turf.
6. Apply herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, and fertilizers safely and accurately; maintain records of fertilizers and chemicals used.
7. Perform a variety of duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems; repair sprinkler heads and lines; locate and repair water breaks.
8. Provide assistance in vehicle maintenance and repair; make routine repairs; check fluid levels, tires and brakes.
9. Provide assistance in patching City streets and sidewalks; replace street signs; paint sidewalk curbs.
10. Operate pressure washer to clean sidewalks and remove graffiti.
11. Provide general assistance and support within assigned operation.
12. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Seasonal Maintenance Assistant I
Experience: No experience is required.
Education/Training: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record.
Seasonal Maintenance Assistant II
In addition to the qualifications for Seasonal Maintenance Assistant I:
Experience: At least two years of general maintenance and repair experience.
Education/Training: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record.
Knowledge of:
Seasonal Assistant I:
Basic principles and practices of maintenance and repair within the assigned area.
Ability to:
Provide routine assistance and support for assigned programs and operations.
Perform heavy manual labor within the area of assignment.
Learn the operations, services and activities of the assigned maintenance and repair program.
Learn to operate a variety of equipment and tools related to area of assignment.
Learn occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Deal tactfully and effectively with the general public.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Seasonal Assistant II
Operations, services and activities of the assigned maintenance and repair program.
Operating characteristics of a variety of equipment and tools related to area of assignment.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to:
Perform general maintenance, construction or repair duties within the area of assignment.
Safely and effectively perform assigned duties with limited supervision.
Operate a variety of equipment and tools related to area of assignment.
