CITY OF BEAVERTON is Hiring a Senior Traffic Engineer Near Beaverton, OR


The City of Beaverton is seeking a licensed civil engineer with extensive project management experience to manage the city’s Transportation Capital Projects program as the Senior Traffic Engineer. This position will also lead highly technical project management, design, operation, and project delivery for traffic signal, street lighting, and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) city-wide programs.
This is a full-time, exempt, Management 2 (M2) position. There is one vacancy. The classification is Project Engineer 2

  • Develop, review, approve, and implement transportation program work plans, services, policies, procedures, and reports. Set performance standards. Evaluate performance and program effectiveness and take action for improvement as necessary in coordination with the Transportation System Plan (TSP).
  • Approve designs and/or manage consultants to deliver traffic engineering projects.
  • Mentor and train staff. Schedule, assign and review work. Participate in hiring decisions. Provide opportunities for developmental training and performance coaching to employees. Assist in performance evaluations and discussions. 
  • Advise the Director, City Manager, Mayor, City Council, and Boards and Commissions on transportation engineering issues. Analyze intergovernmental agreements, ordinances and other related documents for policy implications. Prepare and present technical reports to City Council, Boards and Commissions. 
  • Serve as a member of the division senior management team. 
  • Represent the city on intergovernmental agency committees, including the Regional Intelligent Transportation System. Coordinate with other agencies and permitting authorities on traffic signal coordination, and fiber optic sharing.
  • Prepare, recommend, and monitor the budget and capital improvement plan for the Transportation capital projects program. Authorize payments to contractors and consultants. 
  • Perform review of traffic engineering plans and project submittals, ensuring they adhere to the Engineering Standards and other regulations and requirements. such as the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devises and ODOT Standards. 
  • Respond to requests for information from residents, developers, consulting engineers or staff on signal design, timing, operation, and technical issues. 
  • Contribute to the promotion of organizational values, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging; support a culture of accountability within the organization and actively promote the value of respect in a multicultural environment. 
  • Additional duties are outlined in the Project Engineer 2 classification. 
Minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, and
  • Ten years' experience in civil engineering, including
    • Three years of experience in traffic signal design and timing, and
    • Two years of project management experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position. 
Licensing and special requirements
  • Registration as a civil engineer in the State of Oregon, or ability to attain professional license within six months.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the city’s driving standards.
  • Ability to pass reference checks and education verification and satisfy the requirements of a background check.

Starting rate will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position within the posted wage range.
