CITY OF BEAVERTON is Hiring a Seasonal Laborer - Public Works Near Center, OR


From paving roads to ensuring the city’s drinking water is safe, the Public Works Department keeps the City of Beaverton moving! We’re recruiting seasonal workers to support our year-round Public Works crews during the busy summer and fall work season. Seasonal positions include:
  • Flower pot watering 
  • Landscape maintenance 
  • Pond maintenance and creek enhancement
  • Signs and markings
  • Street maintenance
  • Tree watering 
Flower pot waterers: laborers will handle fertilizers, work near busy streets and parks, and access hydrants throughout the city for water supply. They may also assist with trash cleanup. The schedule for flower pot waterers will be 5:30am-4:00pm, Wednesday-Saturday or Sunday-Wednesday.

Landscape maintenance: laborers will operate mowers, trimmers, backpack blowers and other equipment. They will also provide trash pickup and assist Landscape Technicians with other landscaping duties to ensure the lawns and public areas of the community are clean and beautiful for all citizens to enjoy.

Pond maintenance and creek enhancement: laborers will help maintain vegetated water quality facilities, using string trimmers, blowers, movers, and other hand tools to make sure our community’s waterways are safe and beautiful. The weekly schedule will be four ten-hour days, Monday-Thursday.

Signs and markings: painting, striping and signs laborers will assist traffic crews to mark city-owned streets. The work will also include sign maintenance. The candidate(s) will drive a city vehicle and may be required to work graveyard shift for approximately 2 weeks to update heavily trafficked intersections.

Street maintenance: crack sealing, paving and overlay laborers may work with hot rubber, lift 25-50 pounds regularly, push a squeegee in traffic areas, and use jack hammers, brooms, shovels and other miscellaneous hand tools to maintain our roads, sidewalks, and pedestrian paths in great condition.
 
Tree watering: laborers will water trees located on city street rights-of-way and on unirrigated sites. Named a Tree City USA for over 25 years, the care of vital city trees is important to ensure a lasting urban tree canopy for generations to come. Some weekend shifts will be required.
 
Selection Timeline: 
Applications will be reviewed as they are received. Qualified applicants will be contacted via email or phone. Applicants who apply may be considered for all seasonal positions and, if hired, be placed with a specific team based on experience and availability.
 
Applicants who are selected must pass a pre-hire drug screen and physical exam. Pre-hire contingencies may take up to 6 weeks. If hired, City of Beaverton seasonal staff may have the opportunity while employed to be considered for internally posted regular positions.

  • Perform unskilled or semi-skilled manual labor tasks. Operate related motorized small equipment or hand tools including trucks and light construction or maintenance equipment.
  • Set up traffic control for work crew sites. 
  • Complete proper paperwork. Track and document materials usage. Maintain records. 
  • Clean and maintain equipment and work storage areas. Wash and maintain overall cleanliness of section tools, equipment and vehicles. 
  • Assist in notifying citizens of scheduled projects. Answer questions from public regarding projects. 
  • Respond to emergency situations as needed. 
  • Provide excellence in internal and external customer service. Create a positive experience for customers through professional and courteous behavior and creative problem resolution. Focus on producing high quality results. 
  • Represent the city to the public in operational functions as required. Advance and protect the interests of the city and its citizens in all matters. 
  • Develop safe work habits and follow all required safety policies, procedures and techniques. Contribute to safety of self, co-workers and the general public.
Minimum qualifications:
  • 18 years or older 
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to meet city's driving standards. 
  • Ability to satisfy the requirements of a background check and pass reference checks, license verification and physical and drug screen.
