DESCRIPTION

Maintains order and security in the Charles B. Webster Detention Center by supporting certified personnel in ensuring the safety and well-being of inmates, employees, and visitors within the guidelines of applicable state and federal laws, department directives, and rules and regulations. Reports to the Sergeant or other designated person and works with co-workers, inmates, attorneys, visitors, ministers, social workers, and probation, parole, court, police, and other agency personnel to provide operational support.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain and keep a watchful eye on all video surveillance monitors for security and internal and external radio transmissions pertaining to the facility. Maintain and monitor all security intercoms within the facility and in-house telephone system.
  • Maintain control of all entry/exit gates to the perimeter of the facility including access of authorized vehicles to and from the facility only after positive identification. Works control panel for cells, entrance to cell block, emergency exits, and visitation/attorney area. Activate Jail security staff to any area of the facility where it appears that officer backup is required.
  • Responsible for back up panel control of all housing areas as needed.
  • Responsible for notifying the proper authorities in emergency situations. (IE: Fire, Ambulance, and Police).
  • Maintain and keep a daily activity log, either written or computer generated to record movement and activity as specified in the Central Control Post Order.
  • Maintain cleanliness of Central Control area.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:
High School diploma, trade school, or G.E.D.
Experience:
No experience required. Selected candidate will be trained to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.
Previous experience in law enforcement, public safety or another related occupation, preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Considerable knowledge of law enforcement and the corrections process.
  • Familiarity with applicable state and federal laws, county policies and procedures, and departmental directives.
  • Proficiency in using GCIC/NCIC and JMS computer operations.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Possess or have ability to meet current requirements set forth in the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act/Peace Officer’s Standards and Training Act.
Licensing: Possession of a valid driver’s license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment.

  • Math: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
  • Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.
  • Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
  • Physical Abilities: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.
  • Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

This position does not require staff call up in an emergency situation.
This position does not require travel from office to other locations.
