City of Albany is Hiring a Police Officer Recruit (Entry-Level) Near Albany, CA

The Police Officer Recruit position is for individuals interested in a career as a Police Officer but have not yet completed Basic Academy training. Once hired, Recruits will be enrolled in a Police Academy, where they will learn the skills and duties of performing law enforcement functions. While in the Academy, Recruits are paid an hourly wage with limited benefits. Upon successful graduation from the Academy, Recruits are appointed to the rank of Police Officer.

  • Learn principles, procedures, terminology, and operation of equipment used in law enforcement, crime prevention, and investigation;
  • Read, understand, and retain course material offered while attending the POST Basic Academy;
  • Perform physical activities required at the Basic Academy;
  • Observe accurately and recall names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places;
  • Remain calm and controlling own emotions in tense situations;
  • Learn and interpret laws, regulations, policies and procedures;
  • Carry out oral and written directions;
  • Make rapid, sound independent judgments within legal and procedural guidelines;
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, records, and other written materials;
  • Operate a variety of specialized police department equipment including computerized telecommunications and dispatch equipment;
  • Establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the Academy at all levels.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 20 ½ years of age or older at time of application
  • Valid California Driver’s License, with a satisfactory driving record.
Special Requirements
  • California POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB)
    • Qualifying score minimum: T-Score of 45
    • Assessment results are valid within one year (12 months) from the date the test was administered. Applicants must submit their PELLETB scores on official letterhead from an approved training institution with their application.   • Pass the National Testing Network (NTN) - Law Enforcement Test: The written test may be waived for applicants with a recently achieved minimum passing score for each section: Video: 65%, Writing: 65% and Reading: 65%. The score letter must be dated within the last 12 months (from the date of the test) and must be sent directly to the Albany Police Department from the NTN website.   • Physical Agility Testing: The Physical Agility Test may be done at a later date during the interview process. However, applicants may submit a minimum score of 384 on the POST Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB). Assessment results are valid within one year (12 months) from the date the test was administered and must be provided on official letterhead from an approved training institution. Testing must be completed at a regional law enforcement training center.

All completed applications will be reviewed. Based on the information in the application documents, the most qualified applicants will be invited for further examination. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination.

2. Oral Board & Chief’s Interview
After all applications have been reviewed, the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in an oral board interview consisting of two to three members of the Albany Police Department. Candidates that pass the oral board interview will be placed on an Eligibility List. A select number of candidates from the Eligibility List will then be invited to participate in the Chief’s interview.
3. Provide a Physical Agility Test Score
Once you pass the Oral Board & Chief's Interview, we will ask you to complete a Physical Agility Test (if not already attached to your application). Applicants may submit a minimum score of 384 on the POST Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB). Assessment results are valid within one year (12 months) from the date the test was administered and must be provided on official letterhead from an approved training institution. Testing must be completed at a regional law enforcement training center.

REMINDER: Applicants may substitute the Physical Agility Test Score for a minimum score of 384 on the POST Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB). No other substitutions will be allowed.
4. Background Investigation 
A thorough investigation of a personal history, including but not limited to work history, education, military, arrest record, etc., will be conducted on candidates certified to the Police Department. A polygraph is a part of the background examination. 
 
5. Job Offer
Candidates may be provided with a conditional job offer. After receiving a conditional offer of employment, candidates must successfully complete a required psychological examination and medical examination prior to appointment. 
 
6. Academy 
Recruits will be enrolled in a police academy. While in the academy, Recruits are paid an hourly wage with full medical and other benefits.
 
7. Appointment to Police Officer
Upon successful graduation from the Academy, Recruits are appointed to the rank of Police Officer with full benefits.
