ChildRoots is Hiring a Break Support - Early Childhood Education Near Portland, OR

Job Description

Job Description

So many things are different about child care after the pandemic, but ChildRoots’ commitment to safe, stable care and education is as strong as ever.

We’re currently recruiting teacher-qualified Break Support to start immediately.

If you’re passionate about providing young children with a supportive learning environment and helping them explore their capacity for independence, you’re a kindred spirit, and we’d like to connect with you!

Break Support works a guaranteed number of hours per week, working in 2-3 classrooms per day, offering Teachers breaks and lunches. This role is perfect for someone who's adaptable, adventurous, and excited to be a valued part of several stable classroom groups.

If you’ve worked in a formal child care environment or have studied early childhood education, you’re a great candidate for this role, and you already know that teaching and child care is HARD work. It’s about more than meeting physical needs – it’s about understanding another human’s experience and finding ways to help them on their personal journey. At ChildRoots, children’s needs are our primary focus, but we recognize that adults need support and encouragement, too, so on a day-to-day basis, we try to truly “see” each other and to create a supportive, compassionate workplace experience.

One way we demonstrate this commitment is pay equality. Child care is a low-margin/low-profit industry that struggles to compensate workers adequately, and we are no exception. People and their efforts are what make this business run, and payroll is by far our biggest expense, so we are very thoughtful and intentional when it comes to employee compensation.

All ChildRoots Break Support start at $18.75/hour because we think it’s important to give qualified candidates the same earning opportunities. We also offer annual merit-based pay raises (up to $0.50/hour per year).

We believe strongly in offering full-time employees resources and time for self-care, too, so we offer excellent health/vision insurance (we pay 80% of the cost), dental insurance (we pay 80%), life insurance (we pay 100%) and a 401(k) retirement savings plan with a generous company match. We also offer paid Holidays, a weeklong Winter Break, and opportunities for professional development throughout the year to help everyone meet the Office of Child Care’s continuing education requirements.

To work with us, you must be teacher-qualified and currently enrolled in Oregon's Central Background Registry.

These easy, online trainings are required within 30 days of hire:

  • Pediatric CPR/First Aid Course
  • Oregon Food Handler's Card
  • Introduction to Child Care Health & Safety online course
  • Recognizing & Reporting Child Abuse & Neglect online course
  • Prevention is Better than Treatment online course
  • Safe Sleep for Oregon's Infants online course

The challenges of COVID reminded us how vital it is to center our employees’ well-being. We know we still have much to do to be the BEST place to work in child care in Portland, but that’s what we’re working toward.

All employees are eligible for:

  • 1-3 weeks of Paid Time Off per year, depending on how long they've been with ChildRoots.
  • 25 paid holidays and all-school days off
  • Company-provided continuing education
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan with generous company match and 100%, immediate vesting

Full-time employees are eligible to enroll in our insurance plans, including:

  • Providence Health, including vision, naturopathic, chiropractic, acupuncture, AND massage
  • Principal or Willamette Dental

We value commitment and invite you to stay with us for at least a year.

To learn more about us, explore our website, take a virtual tour of our facilities, and review our COVID-19 Health & Safety Guidelines.

We're a pro-vaccination community and require all employees and enrolled parents to be fully vaccinated against COVID. We still practice extraordinary safety protocols like daily health checks, masks, stable groups, and extra cleaning, and will do so for as long as it takes to keep our community safe.

Thank you for your consideration. We hope to hear from you!
