Children’s Home Society, Black Hills, is currently seeking a Residential Youth Counselor to work as part of a team providing supervision and trauma informed care of children within the residential program. Want to hear firsthand what it's like to be a Residential Youth Counselor? Watch here!

What You'll Do:

Your responsibilities as a Full Time Residential Youth Counselor would include:

  • Child Supervision: Nurture children through interactive and engaging strategies. Maintain vigilant supervision of children. Facilitate structured activities, i.e., games, outdoor recreation, etc., if applicable. Assist children with hygiene, diet, getting ready for school, etc. Respond to emotional dysregulation in a trauma informed manner, supporting as needed.
  • Team Participation: Participate as member of treatment team and maintain communication with the team. Assist in keeping unit clean and orderly.
  • Data Management and Communication: Document required hand off communication. Complete daily/weekly logs on assigned children. Complete behavioral/restraint/incident reports before leaving shift.
  • Ensure safety standards and policies and procedures are followed.
  • Monitor and supervise phone calls and visits as set by child’s therapist.
  • Professional Development: Work on Quality Improvement goals. Attend required annual training and demonstrate competency in required areas. Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings.
  • Complete primary responsibilities as needed.

  • Communication Methods– Must be able to get important points across and understand the needs of children. Listens carefully to complex issues in order to effectively respond. Difficult and sensitive issues require careful articulation so as to preserve a relationship or to prevent misunderstanding and potential liability to the Agency. Written and oral communication important. Educates and mentors.
  • Professional/Ethical Conduct – Must be able to conduct oneself in a manner that promotes professionalism and teamwork throughout the Agency, setting an example for others to follow. Responsibility for highly confidential and sensitive information requires ethics and professionalism beyond reproach.
  • Teamwork Methods, Team Membership Relationships,– Must be able to contribute as a team member so as to promote the achievement of team goals. Cooperatively and respectfully interacts with other team members to encourage positive results.

Schedule:

  • 4 Days On, 3 Days Off
  • Saturday - 8 AM to 10 PM
  • Thursday & Friday - 2 to 10 PM
  • Wednesday - 8 AM to 4 PM or 2 to 10 PM

Compensation: Competitive wages based on experience and education, with a benefits package equaling up to 30% of your wages, as well as yearly merit based raises.

  • $20.00 - $25.41/hr depending on applicable education and work experience
  • plus up to $2/hr shift differential

Requirements

Experience/Education/Skills:

  • High School Diploma or GED required and one to two years related experience and/or training.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • References that can depict level of interest in working with children with behavioral issues.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use personal computers and software utilized by office.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Residential environment focused on care of children with behavioral issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to physically restrain a child in ways taught by the Agency while being able to verbally communicate to the child and other staff. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
