Director of Marketing & Communications

CDS is a co-educational preschool through eighth grade school serving over 470 students in the Mission Dolores neighborhood of San Francisco with two campuses, two sheep, and lovely people.

Summary 

This position oversees the development and execution of strategic internal and external communication and marketing initiatives that promote the mission of the school and tell the CDS story. This position is the nexus, catalyst and facilitator for all communications at CDS.

Responsibilities 

  • Develop and implement an internal communications plan and external marketing plan to tell the CDS story in collaboration with the team leads (Director of Finance and Operations, Director of Advancement, Director of Curriculum and Program Innovation and Assistant Head of School)
  • Create and manage the approval process for editorial materials coming from various school offices. 
  • Manage all crisis communications and serve as point person for communications needs in collaboration with the HoS, AHoS and BoT.
  • Website and internet presence
    • Serve as the primary content director for the CDS website. Design web pages as needed and proactively work with each department to keep information and news current on the site. 
    • Oversee future development projects and implement new projects on the web as needed. 
    • Develop a strategic marketing plan to attract partners, families and employees to CDS via social media and website.
  • Write and edit diverse communications for internal and external audiences, including all school publications.
  • Promote internal and external school events, including fundraising and community events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Publications 

  • Parent communications and materials – weekly newsletter/blog, school directory, family and faculty handbook, summer mailing, school stationery, business cards, school calendar (in partnership with appropriate administrators). 
  • Support the creation of the school yearbook (in partnership with faculty leads and students)
  • Admission materials (in partnership with Enrollment Management Office). 
  • Annual Report and other Advancement materials, including the capital campaign collateral (in partnership with Advancement Office). 
  • Extended Program publication support (in partnership with EP staff). 
  • All CDS advertisements, including developing advertising strategy (in partnership with Enrollment Management Office). 
  • Manage relationships with graphic designers and writers, including parent volunteers. 

Photography and Video 

  • Manage photo and video library, including archival management of photos. 
  • In coordination with faculty, photograph/video classroom activities/events that help tell the CDS story.
  • Develop content, including writing text and creating and producing videos
  • Recruit and manage parent volunteer photographers, and/or attend school events and take photos for publication. 
  • On occasion, identify and manage paid photographers. 

Media relations 

  • School spokesperson and crisis management coordinator in time of crisis. 
  • Press releases and cultivating relationships with local media. 
  • Radio announcements 
  • Cultivating relationships with CAIS and NAIS to share press-worthy news. 
  • Pursue profile-building opportunities for the school, such as faculty/administrator. speakerships and opportunities to publish, and award recognition (e.g., CASE Independent Schools Award, NAIS Diversity Leadership Award). 

Manage the school brand, logo and “look and feel” 

  • Maintain school style guide. 
  • Manage school logo items, and the design of new logo items. 
  • Design and produce facility signs. 

Admission support 

  • Interview parents applying to grades K-8 on an as-needed basis. 
  • Participate in preschool assessment days. 
  • Create collateral and support website updates to advance messaging to potential families.

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, or related communications field. 
  • Five years of direct, progressively responsible experience in marketing and communications. Demonstrated strong oral communications skills; including capacity to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse community. 
  • Appropriate professional demeanor, judgment, and maintenance of strict confidentiality. 
  • Deep appreciation and understanding of the school’s mission and the ability to articulate academic values internally and externally. 
  • Excellent attention to detail, editing and proofreading skills. 
  • Project management experience; multitasking organizational ability enabling a capacity to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines; experience proactively managing regularly changing work priorities.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.

Compensation

Salary will be based on qualifications and experience. Annual salary is $112,468 - $124, 964 per year.
