Director of Literacy Job Description

Job Goal: The Director of Literacy is responsible for promoting literacy acquisition for all students, K-12. The objective is to ensure every learner acquires a solid literacy foundation for academic and lifelong success. This role involves implementing education policies, curricula, and teaching methods and maintaining legislative requirements to ensure college, career, and military readiness. The Director of Literacy serves as a resource for instructional staff and administration for literacy and provides leadership in the development, implementation, and monitoring of systems, and policies.

Contract: 235 Days

Reports To: Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher
  • Successful classroom teaching experience at the elementary and/or secondary level in the field of literacy
  • Valid South Carolina Professional Teaching Certificate and/or endorsements in related field
  • Knowledgeable in current and emerging educational research, current literature, trends, and developments, as well as evidence-based practices in the field of literacy
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with the South Carolina College and Career Readiness Standards for English Language Arts (ELA) for grades K-12
  • Knowledge of Science of Reading and South Carolina legislative requirements
  • Proficient knowledge of effective instructional practices, balanced assessments, and data analysis
  • Ability to make student-centered decisions
  • Ability to take initiative, be detailed-oriented, and highly organized
  • Ability to develop long-term goals and objectives
  • Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate work and to promote positive staff morale.
  • Ability to schedule and monitor development projects
  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and make recommendations for improvements
  • Strong leadership skills and demonstrated success in and knowledge of supervision, organization, and administration
  • Effective interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and conflict resolution skills

Performance Responsibilities

  • Provides direction and leadership in the development and implementation of a comprehensive ELA curriculum for all K-12 schools including scope and sequence documents, pacing guides, units of study, interventions and balanced assessments
  • Ensures the K-12 ELA program is in alignment with the South Carolina College and Career Readiness Standards for ELA
  • Builds coherence with the Early Learning Standards to ensure a PreK alignment.
  • Provides leadership implementation of effective instructional practices to support the PreK-12 ELA curriculum
  • Coordinates the selection of instructional materials, supplies, equipment, textbooks, and assessment and intervention tools to support the implementation of ELA standards
  • Assists with the development of district assessments for K-12 ELA
  • Reviews and evaluates results of state and district assessments and recommends appropriate modifications to the ELA program
  • Assesses the overall ELA curriculum's impact to ensure students receive a balanced offering aligned to the Literacy Framework
  • Utilizes technology as a critical means for delivering, assessing, and transforming the teaching and learning of ELA
  • Assists with the development and facilitation of district and school-based professional learning for administrators, teachers, and instructional assistants to increase student growth and achievement in ELA
  • Collaborates within the Office of Curriculum and Instruction and across district departments to provide technical assistance and support in the development and/or implementation of district programs, practices, and processes
  • Develops and manages an annual budget related to K-12 literacy
  • Reviews and evaluates the effectiveness of programs and resources and makes recommendations for improvements
  • Prepares and presents information, reports, and data related to literacy, reading and related curricula to the Chester County Board of School Trustees, South Department of Education, staff, and stakeholders
  • Assists with the supervision of library/media staff, reading interventionists, and reading coaches
  • Coordinates the support of non-district resource providers for literacy
  • Participates in professional learning, training sessions, and state and local meetings for leaders in the field of literacy
  • Performs other duties as directed or as the need arises
