Chester County of Pennsylvania is Hiring a Maintenance Technician I Near West Chester, PA

Summary

The Department of Facilities is seeking a Maintenance Technician I for the County Bridge Maintenance crew. This position will assist with all maintenance and repair activities conducted for County-owned roadway bridges. The position requires the ability to perform basic masonry, concrete and carpentry work, fabricate and erect signs, snow removal, and/or asphalt repairs, etc. The applicant must have the ability to work with and around heavy equipment, tools and equipment of the trade and perform other duties as required. Applicant must have High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and a valid driver's license. At least one year of related experience is preferred. A valid CDL is a plus.
The Bridge Maintenance Technician I is responsible for performing tasks and assisting with maintenance and repairs of County roadway bridges such as basic masonry, concrete, asphalt repair, carpentry, fabricating and erecting signs, etc., as well as snow removal when necessary. This position assists with maintenance of County facilities and equipment to ensure that facilities are clean, safe, well maintained and suitable for use by the public.
The employee in this position is classified as an essential employee and may be required to work when the County offices are officially closed due to inclement weather, natural disaster, other emergency situations, etc. and occasional work beyond normal hours, on weekends and/or holidays, as required. A valid driver’s license is required.
Requires completing documentation granting permission for the County of Chester to obtain a 3-year Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Requires a criminal background check.

Essential Duties

  • Assist with general repairs and maintenance of County roadway bridges, including basic masonry, concrete, and carpentry, etc.
  • Assist with fabricating and erecting road signs.
  • Assist with asphalt repairs.
  • Assist with substructure and culvert repairs and maintenance
  • Assist with snow removal at bridges and other county facilities.
  • Use and maintain hand tools, power tools and small equipment (minor repairs).
  • Conduct pesticide application (under direction from certified applicator).
  • Snow removal using hand tools and gas-powered equipment.
  • Perform other duties, tasks and special projects, as required.

Qualifications/Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Qualifications / Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Basic working knowledge of or ability to work with small equipment, tools and materials.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and appropriate manner.
  • Ability to participate effectively as a team player.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Manual dexterity.
  • Successful certification in CPR and first aid training within one year of hire.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends or holidays for emergency or other purposes, as required.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
  • At least one year experience with relevant construction, repairs, or maintenance work.
  • Basic knowledge of carpentry, concrete and/or masonry work.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment.
  • Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives with little supervision.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Basic knowledge of county and department policies and procedures.
  • Basic time management skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Valid CDL Class A license may need to be obtained depending on job assignment.

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have:
  • Basic knowledge and use of computer and internet.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to learn County specific programs (e.g., Inova, Maximo, etc.).
