Purpose:

As the main point of contact for volunteer opportunities at Cherry Street Mission, the Volunteer Coordinator must effectively communicate the Cherry Street vision and the importance of volunteers to the organization. It is the responsibility of the Volunteer Coordinator to motivate, inspire and retain volunteers willing to donate their time.

Essential Functions:

  • Hold our volunteers in high regard by showing respect and appreciation for their willingness to donate their time to Cherry Street Mission.
  • Recruit individual and group volunteers by developing a strategy that includes outreach, onsite, online and social media communications.
  • Recruit corporations, organizations, businesses and churches in an ongoing effort to develop and maintain consistent groups of volunteers.
  • Respond to all individual volunteer inquiries.
  • Manage the daily volunteer opportunities of the ministry by consistent communication via phone and email to volunteers and staff.
  • Master the CERVIS volunteer management platform to manage the volunteer database and volunteer opportunities efficiently and effectively. Train others to learn platform as appropriate.
  • Ensure and confirm daily Serve A Meal volunteer shifts are full. Make phone calls or emails to fill shifts and confirm attendance.
  • Consistently work to fill additional volunteer opportunities on a daily basis.
  • Direct and document an ongoing recruiting effort to increase volunteerism.
  • Conduct volunteer orientations on designated dates. Provide 1:1 orientations as needed.
  • Maintain staff back up schedules and communications to cover volunteer openings.
  • Train potential volunteers on areas of volunteer interests and upon first volunteer shift.
  • Maintain consistent collaboration with Operations Manager and Environmental Services Manager to plan, schedule, and facilitate large group projects and internal/external events.
  • Lead or assist in leading large group volunteer projects.
  • Communicate with all departments of the organization to identify available opportunities and needs for volunteers (i.e. special events).
  • Collaborate with Discipleship Manager to recognize, recruit and recommend current volunteers to further their volunteer experience by becoming an Activities Volunteer or Bible Study volunteer.
  • Work with Programs & Services / Housing Stability on managing guest volunteers.
  • Periodically evaluate volunteers to determine a good fit with current volunteer shifts or encourage to deepen their volunteer commitment for more intense opportunities.
  • Assist volunteers when transitioning to Workforce Development opportunities.
  • Track volunteer hours and time with Cherry Street for the purpose of monthly and annual reporting for Cherry Street and tracking for community service hours.
  • Track no-shows of volunteers and handle one on one situations.
  • Coach, retrain or address volunteers that may not be meeting volunteer protocol or expectations.
  • Retain volunteers through personal contact or mass communication celebrating the impact of their contributions to the community as a team.
  • Interview volunteers for storytelling purposes.
  • Engage volunteers in assuring training is appropriate to their assigned positions.
  • Lead building tours with volunteer and external groups.
  • Review and update volunteer opportunities and Volunteer Handbook.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school Diploma or GED is required.
  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred; or equivalent years of work experience that results in comparable knowledge attained through such education.
  • 2 years of experience working directly with volunteers preferred.
  • Project management and event planning experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to professionally speak in front of large groups and in public space.
  • Knowledge of fundamental technologies in a Microsoft environment.
  • Ability to work with other technical and non-technical resources in a collaborative, team format (i.e. CERVIS).
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to demonstrate the work done by the ministry and thoroughly convey the intended message to volunteers and team members
  • Ability to maintain accuracy with data entry, analysis, and reporting.
  • Ability to work independently and adhere to deadlines without prompts.
  • Ability to proactively identify, trouble-shoot, and communicate problems or errors.
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of personalities and competencies.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.

Lifting Requirements
