Charlotte Latin School is committed to educating the whole child, which includes incorporating developmentally appropriate methods to address enrolled students' social and emotional needs. As a member of the schoolwide wellness team, the Lower School Counselor supports students in Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through grade 5 and is responsible for providing a comprehensive school mental health counseling program for the Lower School’s students and families.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provides direct counseling and support services to students and families.
Maintains competency in the areas of:
Assessment and referral
Various psychotherapeutic treatment modalities
Crisis intervention
School mental health best practices
Case management
Family consultation
Supporting and partnering with teachers in addressing students' instructional needs
Sharing resources with teachers in the areas of social and emotional skills
Child and adolescent psychopharmacology
Responds efficiently, effectively, and equitably to the behavioral and emotional needs of the students
Collaborates closely with faculty to ensure coordination of support
Develops and executes parent and faculty workshops relevant to student wellness
Develops and maintains relationships with relevant community providers and resources and shares with families as appropriate
Serves as a member of the Student Support Team
Supports new students upon entry to Charlotte Latin School
Serves on relevant committees as indicated
Collaborates with wellness team members to develop and contribute to comprehensive TK-12 wellness programming

None
Education and Experience
A Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology is required
Licensure as an LCSW, LCMHC, or LPA required
At least 5 years of counseling experience working with elementary-age children
Support services experience in a school setting preferred
Skills
Working knowledge of child development

Understanding of childhood mental health and behavioral disorders, as well as learning differences
Ability to collaborate well with others

Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to understand and interpret data to identify needs and drive practice

Working Conditions and Environment
Intermittently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 pounds.
Continuously see, sit, balance, grasp, and use arms, wrists, hands, and fingers repetitively, with some fine finger dexterity.
Frequently talk and hear.
Intermittently stand, stoop, bend, twist, crouch, kneel, crawl, walk, climb stairs, step stools and ladders, operate foot and hand controls, squeeze, and reach above shoulders.
Exposure to dust, chemicals, fumes, flammables, grease, dirt, stacked materials, electrical equipment, machinery, low to medium noise levels, and moderate indoor heat and cold temperatures.
Long or odd hours, as needed.
