Transportation Engineer I

The Champaign County Regional Planning Commission is seeking a Transportation Engineer I to join our team. Champaign County RPC is a people-focused agency made up of over 100 programs designed to generate possibilities for all within our community. From analysis to policy guidance to offering services to our communities, RPC’s people plan for people.
The Transportation Engineer I will help to support transportation projects in terms of data collection and reporting activities. The Transportation Engineer I will support the development of transportation plans and technical documents for local and regional projects or initiatives. The Transportation Engineer I work is focused primarily on research and data collection and analysis, but there may be opportunities in transportation operations, transportation modeling, traffic safety and intelligent transportation systems as well. The Transportation Engineer I requires knowledge of transportation engineering principles and interest in research and data analysis. The Transportation Engineer I is also responsible for supporting other transportation engineers with transportation modeling projects such as travel demand modeling using specialized modeling software. The Transportation Engineer I works closely with other transportation engineers and transportation planners.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Collects, compiles and analyzes data and support the other transportation engineers on preparing studies in the areas of intersection capacity, traffic impact, access management, corridor analysis, trip generation, signal operations, signal design, parking, etc. through the utilization of transportation software such as SYNCHRO, HCS, and/or Bentley CUBE.
  • Responsible for provision of data, research, and technical support for local modeling efforts.
  • Works with representatives of equivalent responsibilities and experience from area municipalities, the mass transit district, the University of Illinois, the State of Illinois, and Champaign County.
  • Responsible for presenting studies to the CUUATS Technical and Policy Committees and other boards or committees as deemed necessary by the Planning and Community Development Director or Transportation Engineer Manager.
  • Works closely with other transportation engineers on projects assisting with larger-scope or longer-range projects.
  • Ensuring work is data-driven and evidence based in alignment with recent research studies and practices.
  • Performing all other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in civil/transportation engineering or urban planning with one to two years of experience in an engineering environment or a master’s degree in transportation engineering.
  • Working knowledge of transportation engineering concepts
  • Working knowledge of principles and practices of transportation planning.
  • Working knowledge of transportation software such as HCS and SYNCHRO.
  • Working knowledge of roadway design, intersections operation, signage, pavement markings, traffic signals, and cost estimating.
  • Working knowledge of network modeling software such as CUBE and CUBE VOYAGER
  • Experience with computers is essential.
  • Experience with GIS programs and data sources is essential.
  • Experience at presenting transportation studies preferred, but not essential.

Office Location: 1776 E. Washington Street, Urbana, IL 61802
Schedule: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., M-F (A flexible schedule is necessary to support program goals.)
Status: Full-Time (37.5 hours per week)
Pay Grade:  Exempt/4PE
Salary Range: $29.05 - $36.31(DOQ)
