JOB DESCRIPTION:
As the primary contact for Safeway customers, the Cashier-Checker provides friendly, courteous, and helpful service. Primarily responsible for operating computerized cash register to itemize and total customer’s purchases. This is done by passing items in front of an electronic UPC code scanner, or inputting UPC information into a keyboard. Reviews price sheets to note price changes in sale items. Records prices and departments, subtotals taxable items, and totals purchases on cash register. Collects cash, check, or electronic payments from customer and makes change for transactions. Places purchased items in bags. May weigh items, redeem food stamps, WIC checks, promotional coupons, cash checks, check ID for liquor and cigarettes, sell stamps. May return merchandise found defective or unwanted by the customer to the appropriate location. May trouble shoot card reader or scanner errors. May replace paper in printers. May deal with customer complaints or price disputes. May answer telephone or make or answer intercom pages.
