Summary

Under the supervision of the Technical Training Manager, the Technical Training Instructor’s primary purpose is to train Carolina CAT’s employees and customers in technical and other related areas.

Essential Functions

  • Emphasize safety during all Carolina CAT and customer training courses.
  • Teach 120 days a year in the classroom and/or hands on environment in various locations.
  • Conduct Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) certification/qualification classes for employees/customers in accordance with OEM regulations and curriculum.
  • Select or develop teaching aids and curriculums, such as training handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, computer tutorials, and reference works.
  • Partner with the training team to constantly improve training delivery methods and content.
  • Embrace technology to the fullest; always striving to find a better, faster, simpler way to build our technicians capability.
  • Develop relationships with management, supervisors, and employees to gain knowledge of work situations requiring training and to better understand changes in policies, procedures, regulations, business initiatives, and technologies to develop course materials and receive feedback.
  • Conduct training sessions, such as on-the-job training, refresher training, product training, systems training, customer training, etc.
  • Leverage technology to create on demand training.
  • Test trainees to measure competencies related to career development.
  • Monitor methods used by employees and provide constructive feedback that will aid in technical growth and development.
  • Conduct task-specific training that relates to key performance indicators as indicated by the business.
  • Remain current on developments in training and instructional methodologies, including technology enhancements.
  • Attend periodic seminars, forums, and meetings.
  • Achieve and maintain Caterpillar Instructor Accreditation Program (CIAP) certification
  • Consult with senior instructional staff to confirm program/system objectives, operational procedures and system/program constraints.
  • Partner with the Training Coordinator on scheduling and class preparation.
  • Partner with Technical Communicators to understand current product issues and incorporate corrective action measurements into training classes.
  • Partner with Technical Communicators to develop on-demand training focused on top product issues/process errors. Methods of deployment could include video-based, VLT and ILT-based.
  • Partner with Technical Career Development Manager to embrace and provide feedback on Career Development guidelines, progression paths, level proficiency, assessment testing, and our college programs.

Education and/or Experience

  • Associate degree from two-year college or university; or high school diploma with sufficient related experience.
  • Must have the ability to teach and convey technical information in a manner that promotes learning.
  • Proficient experience in reading schematics and blueprints.
  • Must be able to meet company requirements for auto insurance coverage.
  • Adaptable to the everchanging business demands.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Positively engaged employee.
  • Adheres to and promotes company values and actions.
  • Able to operate in an environment with minimal supervision.

Computer Skills

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Adobe, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to learn and use industry-specific computer programs, i.e., SIS 2.0, SIMSi, TMI Web, etc.
  • Proficient in an OEM’s diagnostic software, i.e., CAT ET, ERT, VIMS, etc.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • A valid driver’s license
  • Must have/attain Caterpillar Instructor Accreditation Program (CIAP) certification
  • Must have/attain Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) Instructor certification
  • Must have/attain Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) proctor certification

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this Job, depending on site location, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts and equipment. The employee may occasionally be exposed to high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions and vibration. The employee may occasionally be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in some work environments is occasionally loud.

Travel Requirements

The travel requirement characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to travel to Carolina CAT branch locations/customer sites to deliver training materials/perform hands on training. Occasional overnight stays are required, determined by length of training and distance to location. The employee is occasionally required to travel to OEM training facilities, demonstration centers, etc., for training/development purposes which may require air travel and/or long-distance driving and extended overnight stays of up to 5 days. The employee must provide their own vehicular transport and will be reimbursed for mileage related to required travel for business purposes.
