Unit Manager, FT

Job Summary:

Theunit manager performs routine duties independently, setting priorities andscheduling work in accordance with policies and procedures. The unit managerexercises considerable judgment in applying professional knowledge, policy andpractices to solve nursing issues and is reviewed by the supervisor throughconferences, reports and observation of results obtained.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Providesguidance and direction to ancillary staff in both clinical and personnelissues.
  • Assiststaff in assessing resident status related to medical issues, social,psychological, and spiritual issues.
  • Givesand receives report at beginning and end of shift.
  • Makesdaily rounds to each Resident to evaluate needs and effectiveness of nursingcare provided.
  • Notifiessupervisor and contacts physician regarding significant changes in thecondition of a Resident.
  • Coordinatesnursing activities with other Resident care services.
  • Maintainsaccurate and safe disposition of medications.
  • Assistsunit personnel with interpretation and planning of assignments.
  • Providessupport and guidance to residents and families on clinical issues andchallenges. Assists in resolution of concerns and grievances voiced by eitherparty.
  • Ensuresthat sufficient staff are available to meet the regulatory requirements andclinical needs of the residents.
  • Reviewperspective admissions if required for determination of needs.
  • Ensuresthat staff abides by the principles and techniques of Infection Control andSafety by providing an environment that is clean, safe, and comfortable for theresidents.
  • Ensuresthat all staff complies with policies and procedures, rules and regulations aswritten/disciplines staff as needed per policy. In-services staff as neededrelated to clinical tasks, education and safety.
  • Evaluatesemergency or disaster situations and offers assistance as needed.
  • Performsaudits as assigned by DON/ADON.
  • Investigatesaccidents and incidents related to patients/residents, staff or visitors andprovides first aid and follow up as indicated.
  • Investigatesabuse allegations and reports such immediately to the DON/ADON/Administratorfor follow-up.
  • Shares"on-call" responsibilities with other supervisory staff.
  • Developsa supervisory report to the DON/ADON regarding pertinent issues.
  • Performsthe duties of a charge nurse if required.
  • Flexibilityto work evening and weekends if required.
  • Promotes safety awareness. Maintains a safe environment forresidents, staff and visitors.
  • Performsdaily rounds of all patients/residents on the unit assigned.
  • Reviewsthe clinical record of each patient/resident to ensure it is accurate andcomplete.
  • Performsassessments on patients/residents assigned to the unit on a quarterly basis(includes Skin, Falls, Sr, B&B, Elopement, etc.)
  • ReviewsCare Plans on all patients/residents to amend/delete items as required. AttendsCare Planning meetings with other disciplines.
  • Oversightof all care provided on the unit/ensures all rules and regulations are incompliance.
  • Providesguidance and support to staff.
  • Participation in performance management for unit team members including coaching, counselling, discipline and evaluations.
  • Committedto working with residents and families to develop and implement strategies thatpromote person-centered care.
  • Applies '"5-star" customer service approach in all aspects of the job.

Qualifications:

  • Mustbe a graduate of an approved school of nursing / BSN preferable but notrequired
  • Musthave current registration in the Massachusetts.
  • Minimumof 3 years of experience in a "charge nurse" / supervisory capacitypreferably in LTC.
  • Excellentinterpersonal, organizational, and clinical skills with the ability tocommunicate effectively.
  • Abilityto coordinate emergency situations and delegate appropriately in a calm manner.
  • Ableto handle multiple responsibilities and priorities.
  • Abilityto manage and supervise staff, working directly with them when required.
  • Abilityto make independent decisions related to clinical/staff concerns.
  • Participatesin holiday rotation.
  • Mayneed to work a shift on the floor including off shift inf needs arise.
