Bilingual (Spanish/English) Medical Assistant

Location: Wilkes-Barre, PA

Shift: Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm

Compensation: $22.00 per hour

Status: Full-Time (37.5 hrs./wk.), non-exempt

Job Description: The Medical Assistant will be responsible providing support in the clinic by performing administrative and clinical duties under the direction of the program director and clinicians. The Medical Assistant will also be responsible for providing reproductive and sexual health education related to disease prevention and healthy behavior, providing health screenings (i.e., HIV/STD testing, risk reduction counseling, etc.), and providing reproductive and sexual health resource identification for persons seeking additional reproductive health services. Performs phlebotomy and vaccination related activities as needed. Performs duties in English or Spanish, depending on the preference of the patient.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Fluently speaks, translates, and writes in both Spanish and English. Utilizes these skills to provide patients with services in the preferred language of their choice.

2. Schedules patient visits, provides follow-up/reminder calls and tracks missed appointments.

3. Prepares exams rooms, cleans, and sterilizes medical equipment/furniture.

4. Provides frequent health screenings (i.e., HIV/STD rapid testing), risk reduction counseling, health education, and reproductive and sexual health care system referrals.

5. Performs all appropriate testing services for HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) including, but not limited to, rapid fingers pricks, urine-based testing, and blood draws.

6. Prepare testing samples, (i.e., blood or urine samples) for submissions to the lab including, but not limited to, spinning samples in the centrifuge, properly packing supplies in mailing boxes, ensuring that testing samples are safely transported to the appropriate shipping facility and sent to the lab.

7. Performs duties related to agency’s Electronic Health Record, Practice Management System, insurance billing, laboratory services.

8. Performs oral translation for other case managers, as well as other clients of other agency departments as needed.

9. Assists with performing English to Spanish translation of agency documents for case management, as well as other agency departments as needed.

Education

· Medical Assistant or nursing degree from an accredited college or university

Experience

· 1-3 years’ experience in medical assisting

· 1-3 years’ experience in phlebotomy

· 1-3 years’ experience in medical billing/coding

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Ability to read and speak in Spanish and English is REQUIRED

· Ability to maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow

· Ability to perform phlebotomy and administer injections

· Knowledge of medical terminology and EHR (Electronic Health Records) data entry

· Knowledge of local health and social services preferred

· Knowledge of HIV, Hepatitis, TB, and STDs preferred, but not required

Physical Requirements or Licenses

· CPR and/or BLS certified

· Certification to preform HIV testing and counseling in Pennsylvania preferred, but not required

· Ability to lift and move up to 35 pounds

· Valid PA driver’s license. Travel to other offices (Bloomsburg and Hazleton) is required.

Interviews will be on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Initial applicants will be reviewed beginning on May 1, 2024. Those candidates selected for further consideration will be contacted with five business days of the initial review process to schedule an interview. Interviews may be conducted virtually or in person.

Selected candidates must be able to provide three professional references and they will be required to provide or complete a PA Criminal Background Check, FBI Background check, PA Child Abuse Clearance, and Drug Screening.
