This position provides specific and advanced academic and immigration-related advising to international students, with a particular focus on partnership program participants who have specific academic plans as well as non-degree-seeking exchange students. This includes all associated student advising, engagement, and support activities within CISP (CEGE-International Education).
Major duties and responsibilities
Under the general supervision of Associate Dean, the International Student Advisor performs the following duties in the Center for International Studies and Programs (CISP) in the areas of student advising, academic support, and program assistance:
  • Advises International Partnership Program (IPP), transitory, and exchange students on a wide range of issues, including academics, campus procedures and policies, cultural and social adjustment, and immigration matters to help students achieve their educational goals
  • Coordinates group advising sessions and participates in the planning and implementation of the orientation of international students
  • Communicates proactively with international partners, campus stakeholders, and academic departments on partnership and exchange students' needs
  • Assists in developing academic/educational plans
  • Monitors student academic progress via Oracle/CMS and/or EAB
  • Provides advice and assistance to students regarding progress toward degree/program completion; presents alternative academic options when needed; resolves scheduling conflicts; and, supports the resolution of similar issues
  • Utilizes successful interviewing and counseling techniques to support student success and refers students to relevant campus resources
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships between the IPP unit and other professional, on-campus support services
  • Participates in the coordination of college- and campus-wide programming for both partnership students specifically and international students generally
  • Ensures effective program coordination for partnership students; provides timely program correspondence, document processing, recruitment timelines, and program assessment/improvement
  • Collaborates with IA (International Admissions), SFS (Student Financial Services), and IEP (International Extension Programs) staff to ensure efficient partnership student recruitment, admission, enrollment, and orientation each term
  • Supports collaborative efforts with academic departments when developing partnerships with universities overseas
Student Engagement:
  • Communicates with internal university stakeholders to ensure coherence and mutual reinforcement of educational incentives to advance CSUSB's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, strategy, and approach
  • Supports outcome-based orientation, transition, belonging, and success programming for international students
  • Contributes to development of information and wellness workshops, programming, and related cultural events, which promote the inclusion, well-being, and international student success
  • Creates content to increase engagement, raise awareness, and foster collaboration and communication among students and campus
  • Drafts communication pieces and creates content either informational or promotional that focuses on student needs and highlights campus/community support services
  • Ensures that the CISP website information, social media, email, and print communications for prospective and admitted students are sequential, coordinated, accurate, and consistent in message and tone. This includes assisting with the creation of student communication plans that support awareness, preparation and notifications of upcoming events, timelines for required documents, and other international student requirements for successful program integration and academic success
Immigration Services
  • Serves as Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer to support the immigration needs of partnership students and exchange visitors (both F and J visas)
  • Provides travel signatures and general immigration advising to all partnership and exchange students
Other Duties
  • Coordinates the efforts of student assistants
  • Supports student outreach activities
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. (Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)
  • Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of a competence and indicate the potential for further growth. (A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.)
Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned.
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Ability to obtain factual and interpretive information through interviews.
  • Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentation based on these data.
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required;
  • Ability to recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a related field, for example, Counseling, Communication, Education, or International Studies
  • Second language abilities
  • 1-3 years' experience in Advising international students
  • Knowledge of degree requirements and partnership articulation agreements at CSUSB
  • Specialized skills in design, presentations, and communication planning in support of academic success
  • Knowledge and experience with PeopleSoft, EAB/Navigate, and Online Service Request processes
  • Knowledge of immigration regulations and laws regarding F-1 and J-1 visas in support of partnership and exchange student needs
Compensation and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,610 - $4,647 per month
Classification Salary Range: $4,610 - $6,556 per month
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.
Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
