Under immediate supervision of the Manager for Grounds, the Groundsworker performs general gardening work and maintains the grounds in an assigned area of a campus.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Follow instructions of the lead groundsworker in performing a broad range of groundskeeping duties. Show willingness and initiative on all projects and duties. Demonstrate grounds skills in the performance of daily tasks.
  • Operate and maintain equipment and tools for grounds and pest control operations; operate all equipment properly, following proper procedures including safety precautions; service equipment accordingly.
  • Pruning, staking, and thinning trees and shrubs. Proper techniques are used, and proficiency is demonstrated for this task. Planting and maintaining turf, shrubs, and trees. Demonstrate the ability to follow instructions to properly perform these tasks.
  • Minor sprinkler repair. Demonstrate the ability to follow instructions and properly perform this task.
  • General cleanup. Ensure that workstations are kept clean and neat, all tools and equipment are properly stored, and the general area is kept free of trash and litter.
  • State employees may be required to serve as disaster service workers and participate in disaster recovery efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned. Show initiative and willingness in performing other duties.
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
  • One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's license.
Required Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of general gardening and ground maintenance methods. General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California; perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and follow simple oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to lift, lower, push, and pull loads ranging in weight from 5-60 pounds; carry loads ranging from 20-50 pounds for a distance of up to 20 feet; capable or kneeling, reaching overhead, climbing stairs and ladders; walking, twisting, stooping, bending; depending on the project, may spend 20%-50% of day sitting, 20%-50% of day standing, and 20%-50% of day walking.
Compensation and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,376 per month
Classification Salary Range: $3,376 - $5,297 per month
The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Position Information:
Work status: Full-time/Non-Exempt/Probationary
Schedule: Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

Conditions of Employment
Background Check
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Driver's License Check
Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
Physical Exam
Employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
Mandated Reporter
The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
