Custodians provide a wide range of custodial and related duties for assigned campus areas (buildings, facilities, structures, and adjacent areas.)
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Floor care: sweep, scrub, strip, mop, wax and buff floor. Vacuum and shampoo carpeted areas. Clean assigned rooms to the satisfaction of department management and the campus standards of quality.
  • Replenish lavatory supplies, restock custodial closets, and assist lead workers in determining future needs. Keep all dispensers full and an adequate supply of materials on hand in the custodial closet free of debris, personal items, and in a neat orderly fashion.
  • Empty trash receptacles daily, remove loose trash and dump trash containers adjacent to buildings as directed. Replace liners as needed, flatten old boxes and place in designated areas.
  • Dust all furniture, polish and clean as needed. Replace all lamps and inform lead custodian of burned out lamps too high to reach on a six-foot ladder, or that has ballast problems.
  • Lock and unlock doors and windows as required to assure building and equipment security. Lock and unlock doors as necessary and secure rooms after being cleaned. Report unlocked doors to Public Safety. Direct inquires for admittance to offices to Public Safety.
  • Participate in moving tables, chairs, desks, files, and other equipment and furniture. Promptly move furniture and properly take care not to damage the furniture, floors, walls or doors. Store in proper areas. Assign time to work orders.
  • Participate in setting up for special events, assemblies, registrations, athletic events, and commencement. All set ups are to be done on time and as requested. Difficulties should be reported to Event Scheduling
  • Under direction of a lead custodian or department manager, assist in covering the duties of absent custodian. Show initiative and willingness to perform all other work related tasks as assigned within the broad guidelines of the Classification and Qualification Standards for Custodian.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety.
  • Ability to operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies applicable to the position.
  • Ability to use custodial systems such as those used to track work orders and two-way radios for communication.
  • Ability to observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required.
  • Ability to perform work involving regular physical activity.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships.
  • Duties may involve the use of a state vehicle which would necessitate possession of a valid California driver's license and the successful completion of the campus Defensive Driving examination.
Preferred Qualifications
  • The equivalent to a high school diploma.
Compensation and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,338 per month
Classification Salary Range: $3,338 - $4,490 per month
The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.
The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 14 paid holidays a year. Position Information:
Work status: Full-time/Non-Exempt/Probationary
Schedule: Monday through Friday from 5:00 am to 1:30 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

Conditions of Employment
Background Check
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Driver's License Check
Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
Physical Exam
Employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
Mandated Reporter
The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
