Bureau Land Management is Hiring an Archaeologist Near Prineville, OR

These positions are located in Prineville, OR Prineville District Office, Prineville Central Oregon field Office.

Qualifications:

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, a copy of your unofficial transcripts must be provided with your application.

You must meet the BASIC Requirement *AND* meet the ADDITIONAL Requirement in order to qualify for this position.

BASIC Requirement for the 0193 series:
A. Education
1. Degree that included three (3) semester hours each in the following course areas: 1) History of archeology; 2) Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3) Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; and 5) Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work;
-AND-
Six (6) semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying;
-AND-
Archeological field school.(NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education.)
OR

2. Related Curriculum: Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A. (including archeological field school). NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education.
OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. When combining education with experience, first determine your total qualifying education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then determine the your experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify this grade level. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education and your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.)
OR

C. Experience:
Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.

*AND*

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying:

GS-07:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following in a developmental capacity: 1) assisting routine archeological surveys to include site testing and excavation; (2) drafting and/or recording heritage resources reports and data for supervisor review and/or approval; (3) entering inventory and/or site data into various geospatial databases.
OR
Education: Have successfully completed 1 full year of graduate level education. This education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.
OR
Met the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement by earning a bachelor's degree with at least one of the following (1) a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher based on a 4.0 scale; (2) a 3.5 GPA or higher for required courses completed in a major field of study during junior and senior year of a 4-year college or university; (3) class standing of upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or a major subdivision of the college, such as the College of Liberal Arts, based on completed courses; or (4) membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society certified by the Association of College Honor Societies, excluding freshman honor societies. In order to be creditable under this provision, superior academic achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position being filled. NOTE: Applicants must submit a copy of transcripts.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. (NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education.)

GS-09:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) conducting routine archeological inventories to include site testing and excavation; (2) documenting, analyzing, and/or reporting curatorial data; (3) interacting and/or providing heritage resources information to various groups such as the management, land owners, state and tribal government officials, and the public; (4) carrying out educational and outreach programs to schools and community events.
OR
Education: Have two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree that included a major field of study or specific course requirements generally as stated in the basic requirements. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. (NOTE: You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education.

Responsibilities:

As the Archaeologist in this position, you will:

At the GS-07 level, the incumbent serves as an advanced trainee Archeologist completing assignments designed to develop professional skills in heritage resource management within the framework of BLM's multiple use mission. At this grade level, the incumbent applies basic professional knowledge to recurring and well-precedented assignments to expand their understanding of BLM's heritage resource program requirements and procedures.

At the GS-09 level, the incumbent serves as an Archeologist for the BLM Prineville District, Central Oregon Field Office located in Prineville, Oregon. The Incumbent performs professional work in heritage resource management within the framework of BLM's multiple use mission. At this grade level, the incumbent applies professional knowledge of standard archeological principles, theories, concepts, methods, and techniques to perform recurring, well-precedented projects. With guidance and oversight, ensures artifacts from public lands, and the associated records, are deposited in repositories that meet Federal curatorial facility standards. Conducts routine cultural resource inventories for determining impacts to cultural resources due to developmental activities in accordance with applicable federal laws, regulations, and policies. Conducts site testing and excavation, and provides professional recommendations on the significance of sites, structures, or objects identified in surveys. Drafts professional reports and studies in accordance with legislative and regulatory requirements and the needs for approval of BLM management. Interacts with BLM management, landowners, state government officials, tribal governments, interested parties and the public to provide information and develop opportunities for partnerships. Drafts heritage and paleontological resource input for portions of environmental documents such as environmental assessments, planning documents, and coordinates with other specialists for multiple use documents, in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and Federal Land Policy and Management Act.
