Background

Bronx Charter School for the Arts (Bronx Arts) was founded in 2002 and is a K-8 public school located in the South Bronx, with an elementary school in Hunts Point and a middle school in Soundview. We believe that a rich and vibrant background in the arts is a key catalyst for the academic and social success of all students and that the arts are transformative and have the power to engage students for the long haul, keeping them in school by building a passion that survives for life. At Bronx Arts, students receive daily instruction in theater, dance, music, and visual arts, and lessons in these subjects are integrated into the academic curriculum. Our community is rich in talent, creativity, and entrepreneurship, despite economic and health challenges, including 49% of children living below the poverty line in Hunts Point and 29% of children living below the poverty line in Soundview. Bronx Arts has educated more than 5,000 students and will be celebrating its 20th anniversary during the 2022-2023 school year.

Position

The Interim ED role during the 2022-23 School year is an opportunity to lead Bronx Arts while the Board of Trustees identifies a permanent Executive Director. The Board seeks an interim leader with a successful track record of charter school management with a focus on relationship-building and collaboration. The interim ED will provide leadership and direction for at least the first half of the 2022-23 academic year or until the permanent ED is identified. They will be tasked with assessing all aspects of operations and providing recommendations in alignment with Bronx Arts values and vision, as communicated by the Board of Trustees. The interim ED may represent Bronx Arts externally, maintaining and improving organizational relationships and academic standing, as well as supporting a successful transition to a permanent ED. In addition, the Interim ED will be expected to oversee the charter renewal process in conjunction with the Board of Trustees.

The opportunity begins immediately.

Requirements

• Communicate the Board’s vision for the School and provide management and direction to the Bronx Arts leadership team (including academic leadership, finance, human resources, development, and operations), educators, and staff. 
• Oversee the Chief Academic Officer and curriculum development in conjunction with the two Principals.
• Foster collaboration at all levels and empower staff to maximize productivity, ensure professional excellence, and promote teamwork.
• Evaluate the management and status of all policies and procedures and provide the Board with analyses and recommendations to support operational alignment with the vision, values, and goals of the organization.
• Support operations and administration of the Board by advising and informing Board members, interfacing between the Board and staff, and supporting the transition to the permanent ED.

Qualifications

• Prior experience as the ED of a charter school/network or senior level operations executive at a charter school/network.
• Experience and insight into the New York City charter school sector and familiarity with the needs and priorities of a charter management organization.
• Experience with charter renewal process helpful.
• Experience and comfort with diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility; culturally sensitive communicator.
• Exceptional writing and listening skills, strong communication and organizational abilities; a collaborative spirit.
• Successful track record of personnel management and developing talent, idea-cultivating management approach .
• Proven effectiveness in serving as a spokesperson and representative with funders, family members, community leaders, government officials, the media, and other stakeholders.
