Atlanta Youth Academy is Hiring a Science Teacher Near Atlanta, GA

SCIENCE TEACHER

Position Overview: The Science Teacher provides instruction and guidance to help students explore and understand important concepts in science, including problem-solving and how to gather evidence to support ideas or decisions. The Science Teacher will create lesson plans, present science demonstrations, and grade tests and assignments. The Science Teacher will explore experiential opportunities outside of the classroom or AYA campus.

Education and Experience Requirements

Candidates with at least three years of teaching experience are preferred. Qualified applicants must have a degree in science, or a related field. Candidates with advanced degrees and at least three years of teaching experience in a college preparatory setting are preferred. Individuals must demonstrate a love for children, a thorough knowledge of the academic content area (Science: Life, Earth or Physical), curriculum design and classroom management skills, the ability to motivate and inspire students, and the ability to communicate effectively with parents, other teachers and administrators, both in person and in writing. The applicant should be comfortable with, and effectively instruct project-based learning and hands-on science experiences. The applicant must collaborate with other classroom teachers.

Specific responsibilities include (but not limited to): 

  • Provide content-related and appropriate instruction based on Atlanta Youth Academy’s instructional framework.
  • Design and present individual lesson plans using a variety of teaching techniques that appeal to various learning styles and methods.
  • Plan and conduct lessons/tasks for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provide students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate, and to make broader connections toward the development of their effective critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Administer balanced assessments to assist in the implementation of teaching that effectively and reasonably meets the needs of each student
  • Intentionally and proactively foster a spirit of inclusion and collaboration with students, co-workers, parents, and guardians.
  • Effectively manage/maintain a safe, well-organized learning environment that promotes active learning.
  • Responsibly and appropriately integrate technology into the classroom, as necessary, to support academic instruction.
  • Enforce all administrative policies and rules governing students' learning and behavior.
  • Confer with parents and/or guardians, other teachers, Learning Specialists, and administration to resolve behavioral and academic challenges.
  • Work with Learning Specialist to identify remediation needs and to complete the referral process for remedial services
  • Exhibit effective written and verbal communication skills to and with the entire AYA community.
  • Facilitate home-school communication by such means as parent-teacher conferences, telephone, email, and other forms of appropriate written communication.
  • Provide tutorials for students before or after school.
  • Sponsor co- and extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and academic activities.
  • Prepare for teaching and duty responsibilities to be undertaken by colleagues or a substitute teacher whenever absent.
  • Account for student attendance, punctuality, and general well-being. 
  • Follow professional ethics in all work-related activities.
  • Avoid behaviors which could perceptually position AYA as other than Christ-center, or distracts from colleague morale.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, committee meetings, school functions, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, and other training seminars.

Additional Responsibilities: Perform other tasks as deemed necessary and appropriate by the Academic Director and/or The Dean of the Academy. 

Physical Demands:

When performing activities throughout the day related to the educating of students, the teacher spends most of the day standing in the classroom. He or she must walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver between desks, etc. Dealing with the students can entail kneeling or squatting, stooping, and bending from 50-70 degrees at the waist on an occasional to frequent basis.

Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects (textbooks, materials, desks, chairs, etc.). The teacher must see and hear on a continuous basis as well as speak frequently. Positions may vary from standing, sitting, or walking. On a rare occasion it may be necessary to move quickly, run, etc. over smooth to uneven surfaces such as on asphalt, on the playground, or on the grass.
