General Counsel

Salary: $175,000 to $200,000 per year, with potential flexibility based on experience
Terrific General Counsel position with a social and human services nonprofit in the New York City area. The General Counsel will be an integral member of the organization, serving as a strategic legal advisor to the executive team. Main areas of responsibility will include contract review, compliance, risk management and governance. The General Counsel will oversee the contract management process for agreements, leases, certificates of insurance, etc. This role will also research and implement a contract management system. The General Counsel will work closely with HR and Legal Services to provide legal and ethical oversight. The position will manage and mentor a team of two. Candidates should have approximately 7 years of related legal experience, including time in a supervisory role. Ideal candidates for this role will have experience working in-house at a nonprofit organization. J.D. and admission to the New York State Bar is required. This position currently operates on a hybrid schedule with two days in office. The salary range is $175,000 to $200,000 per year, with potential flexibility based on experience.
Responsibilities:

• Serve as legal advisor for the organization, focusing on contract management, compliance, risk management, and governance
• Oversee and manage contract review for leases, vendors, and funding sources
• Identify and develop strategies to mitigate regulatory and legal issues
• Provide policies and procedures related to governance, regulatory compliance, and business operations
• Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations
• Provide legal advice to the HR and the Legal Services departments for new programs, client matters, employee investigations, etc.
• Manage and mentor a team of two, as well as outside counsel

Qualifications:

• Approximately 7 years of relevant legal experience, including time in a supervisory role
• Experience working as an in-house attorney at a nonprofit organization strongly preferred
• J.D. from an accredited law school and member of the New York State Bar
• Excellent writing and communication skills
• Demonstrated track record of experience with contract management and review
• Experience with employment law, compliance, and risk management a plus
• Experience implementing contract management software a plus
