Job Title: Youth Therapist-Qualified Mental Health Professional
FLSA Code: Exempt, Full time
Reports to: Associate Director of Youth Behavioral Health

POSITION SUMMARY
Demonstrate the mission and vision of Breakthrough Urban Ministries, the Youth Therapist under the supervision of a Licensed Practitioner of the Behavioral Health Department, partners with youth ages 13-21 within the Back 2 Our Future (B2OF) Program. The Youth Therapist may provide some or all of the following: clinical assessment, crisis intervention, treatment planning, writing biopsychosocial histories, community support, therapy/counseling, and administer direct clinical interventions to adolescents, adults, and their families experiencing acute and chronic emotional/behavioral disorders. The Youth Therapist works with other members of the Youth Network team to assist youth with their wellness needs, which is inclusive of stabilization, re-entry into their home school, and employment training. The incumbent accepts the responsibilities and fulfills the obligations as outlined in the position description.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / FUNCTIONS:
  • Complete integrated mental health assessments and treatment plans for youth experiencing crisis.
  • Provide mental health counseling to youth as needed, specifically those with complex post traumatic disorders.
  • Engage in comprehensive care coordination to link youth to community-based behavioral health programs/agencies for long-term mental health, medical and other services.
  • Provide crisis management, including hospitalization when needed to gain stabilization.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and external referral sources.
  • Facilitate weekly trauma and recovery groups.
  • Enter required information into the agency database.
  • Submit written reports to the Associate Director of Youth Behavior Health
  • Maintains current knowledge regarding services to adolescents, adults, and families.
  • Participates in agency in-service trainings as well as self and supervisor directed advanced skill-trainings.
  • Maintains and adheres to current rules and regulations pertaining to services delivered by the Department of Human Services, Department of Children & Family Services, Illinois Healthcare & Family Services, including the Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act (ANCRA), and the Office of the Inspector General.
  • Assures that all youth are linked with appropriate treatment, educational, social, recreational, and medical resources during and prior to completion of service.
  • Evening flexibility required
  • Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree in Social Work or Counseling and two years of experience is required
  • Experience working with youth and young adults with histories of trauma and an understanding of behavioral health issues common to that population.
  • Understanding of standard mental health assessments and counseling theories, skills and trauma informed practice.
SUPERVISION:
  • Direction received from the Associate Director of Youth Behavioral Health
  • Generally, does not supervise any employees. May supervise volunteers and/or interns. Supervision toward clinical license is offered.

  • Understanding of gender-responsive and trauma-based services and treatment.
  • Understanding of substance use disorders and effective approaches to care.
  • Understanding of client confidentiality and adherence to the professional code of ethics for social workers, professional counselors and CADCs.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, professionalism, and problem solving ability.
  • Ability to engage youth at all stages of change
  • Promote customer care through all actions and behaviors
  • Project a professional image to all internal and external customers ensuring correct grooming
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and follow through, and be comfortable working in a changing environment.
  • Demonstrates willingness to consistently improve work performance through their relationship and guidance.
  • Must possess an accurate and informed understanding of cultural and urban realities, especially as related to youth, families, poverty, and community development.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in a public, multi-purpose facility. The typical work environment is a shared office. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be high depending on the activities in the facility.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and/or sit; use hands and fingers to feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; regularly talk or hear. The employee must be able to bend, stoop, pull, lift as well as have overhead extension of arms. Must be able to stand for long periods of time; be able to lift, carry or move at least 50 pounds. Must adhere to proper handling and lifting techniques. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Equipment Used
The employee will generally use general office equipment including but not limited to general classroom items, telephone, computer, calculator, copier, paper shredder, paper cutter, and filing systems.
Safety Requirements
