Grant Funded Position

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Responsible for supporting and assisting in delivering improvements to Club Member literacy skills. Must provide age appropriate literacy assistance, coaching and mentoring for members age 6-18 that are supportive of Boys & Girls Clubs core competencies, core programs, and youth development learning strategy. Provides passionate, motivational and lead support to members in reading skills and comprehension. Supports a positive and creative learning environment where reading enhancement skills can occur. Strong coaching, mentoring and teaching skills are sought after in the areas of reading, comprehension and continuous learning. 

The literacy and reading coach role will require flexibility when it comes working environments. This role will include travel and attendance of meetings, workshops, or spending afterschool hours in a classroom alongside Club Members. This is a hands-on teaching role in a dynamic work environment.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

Prepare Youth for Learning Success

Literacy and reading coach perform the following duties: Supervision of Club Member learning:

1. Collaborate with independent contractors, teachers and program staff, and club administration to identify issues with Club Members or curriculum, set goals, and solve problems

2. Collaborate with stakeholders to develop curriculum and lesson plans focused on literacy and academic support

3. Maintaining and submitting teaching materials and supplies for programming 

4. Attend relevant professional development workshops and sessions to enhance teaching and instructional delivery

5. Conduct Club Members assessments and analyze their work

6. Counsel Club Members to help them discover their strengths and to set goals

7. Interpret data after assessments have been conducted

8. Design and lead literacy sessions for Club Members which include by not limited to small group instruction, project-base learning and literacy learning activities

9. Model and execute literacy lessons for Club members to learn

10. Provides proper record keeping and reporting including activities and events conducted breakdowns of daily participation figures, notable achievements and any problems/issues.

11. Ensure Club Member participation in literacy related programs at the direction of Service Director and Director of Academic Success.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. May interface with community partners in various disciplines to arrange additional educational opportunities.

2. May be asked to showcase members' outcomes successes and endeavors.

3. Consult with supervisors concerning member literacy issues or roadblocks.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club Members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain or interpret guidelines/instructions; instruct, and advise/counsel. 

External: Maintain contact as needed with external community groups, schools, member's parents and other to assist in resolving problems. 

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

1. AA/2 Yrs College, BA/BS, and/or Master's Degree in Education or higher 

2. Current Florida Certified Teacher with Reading or Gifted Endorsement

3. Comfortable speaking in front of large groups and classrooms of students 

4. Excellent teaching experience (based on evaluations and written recommendations)

5. Knowledgeable about reading processes, assessment, and instruction 

6. Effective communicators who aren't afraid to provide honest feedback 

7. Experienced in coaching educators and aiding in professional development 

8. Masters of their craft and comfortable modeling lessons and teaching techniques in front of other educators 

9. Strong diplomacy communication skills, both verbal and written.

10. Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics.

11. Understanding of children's educational development.

12. Ability to work with diverse populations with maturity and flexibility. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Physical requirements:Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions and policy manuals. The ability to clearly and concisely exchange/receive ideas, facts and or technical information with others. Ability to visually monitor activities of Club Members. The employee is required to use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee may occasionally lift and or move up to 10 pounds. Work environment: Club and/or classroom environment. Travel may be required to attend off-site meetings, conferences, or workshops. May require time standing for long periods of time instructing in a classroom or club setting.
