Botanica, The Wichita Gardens is a botanical garden located in the Riverside neighborhood of Wichita, KS. Botanica opened in 1987 and hosts thousands of guests each year who visit for regular garden displays and major events including the annual tulip display and holiday light show. The gardens total 20 developed acres with more land to expand in the future. The organization depends heavily on support from volunteers, with whom employees and the public interact frequently.

This is an hourly, part-time position. Benefits at 32 hours/week include health and dental insurance, paid holidays, and accrual-based paid time off. Evening, weekend, and holiday work can be expected.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK

This is a manual work position that provides various facility support services including general maintenance, routine cleaning, event set up, and security support. The position reports to the Facilities Supervisor. Major assignments are received from the Facilities Supervisor; however, crewmember is expected to act proactively to ensure buildings are well-maintained.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

• Perform cleaning activities such as trash removal, vacuum, mopping, dusting, etc.
• Responsible for all set up requirements for internal meetings and public rentals.
• Perform general security tasks such as event security, lock/unlock gates and buildings.
• Provide general customer service support to visitors.
• Make minor repairs on building or equipment and report needed major repairs to supervisor.
• Complete daily maintenance check lists.

REQUIREMENTS OF WORK

This position requires the ability to:

• Use cleaning methods, materials and equipment.
• Maintain simple records
• Follow verbal and written instructions and exercise good judgement.
• Acquire within a reasonable period of time, knowledge of the procedures, tools, equipment and materials used in custodial work
• Ability to work extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays, as needed
• Work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist
• Safely operate golf carts and maintenance vehicles
• Tolerate airborne nuisances associated with open grounds and windy conditions
• Lift and carry bulky items weighing up to 50 pounds
• Continuously perform tasks that require one to push, pull, climb (ladders and in and out of vehicular equipment), bend, twist, reach, stand, and walk about (up to a half mile at a time) for most of an eight-hour shift
• Communicate effectively
• Acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Driver’s License and automobile insurance
• An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
