Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center is Hiring a Visual Arts Manager (FT) Near Boston, MA

We provide a broad range of innovative programs and services centered around education, workforce development, family support, and arts and culture, leaving a significant and lasting impact on the lives of more than 13,000 children, youth, and adults every year.
About Pao Arts Center:
Through arts, culture, and education, Pao Arts Center brings together community members across generations to reclaim a critical piece of Chinatown history to create healthy families and a vibrant community. In partnership with Bunker Hill Community College, BCNC opened Pao Arts Center in 2017 to be Chinatown’s first community-based arts center and Boston’s newly dedicated Asian American and Asian immigrant cultural space. The Center seeks to: integrate creativity, social service, and education; respond to community priorities; amplify AAPI and Chinatown stories and voices; empower AAPI artists; and elevate the value of arts and culture in everyday life.
About The Role:
The Visual Arts Manager will play a vital role in leading Pao Arts Center’s arts strategy in collaboration with the Center Director and the Performing Arts Manager. Currently, Pao Arts Center’s Visual Arts Programming includes 3 exhibitions a year, an artist-in-residency program, and outdoor public art activations. In addition, the VAM will work closely with the Communications and Development Manager to promote programs and their impact in carrying out Pao Arts Center’s mission and strategic priorities. 
What You Will Do :
Programming (80%)
  • Execute a long-term visual arts strategy for Pao Arts Center’s exhibit, public art, and residency programs to support mission and strategic priorities 
  • Collaborate with the Performing Arts Manager to design and implement artist support opportunities 
  • Manage visual arts exhibitions, artist residency programs, and temporary public art activations
  • Collaborate with interns to execute corresponding public engagement opportunities 
  • Oversee visual arts program budgets, evaluations, and administrative logistics 
  • Communicated with artists, constituents, partners, vendors, and event managers
  • Collaborate with marketing and communications content ranging from social media to print materials
  • Collaborate with BCNC and BHCC managers to create opportunities for inter-department and organizational programs and partnerships when appropriate
  • Serve as Pao Arts Center representative during panels, public events, and neighborhood coalitions and projects (for example Chinatown Cultural Plan)
Supervisory (10%) 
  • Train and supervise event staff, interns, and volunteers assisting with gallery staffing and visual arts events 
Operations and Administration (10%)
  • Familiarity and understanding of space, visitor service protocols, security, and technology procedures to ensure visitors, artists, and renters feel welcome at the Center when needed.
  • Contribute to gallery staffing when needed 
  • Participate in BCNC agency-wide working group on special topics (for example, database and metrics, cultural competency).
What We Look For:
  • Bachelor’s degree in arts-related field or equivalent demonstrated work experience for more than 2 years with exhibitions, public art, or arts-non profits
  • Experience with public art installations or events and exhibition logistics
  • Experience and/or knowledge of Asian American and/or Asian immigrant issues.
  • Commitment to the intersection of arts, social justice, and community building.
  • Excellent verbal and written language skills.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively.
  • Strong project management and prioritization skills.
  • Strong attention to detail including proofreading skills.
  • High level of customer service, and public relations skills and enjoy working with the public.
  • Ability for efficiency, grace, and tact during high public traffic cycles.
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations and multitask.
  • Think creatively and solve problems.

Working Conditions 
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule and may require local travel during the workday.
  • Work is performed primarily in a standard work environment, including the operation of computer equipment, and physical demands associated with a traditional work setting, e.g., walking, standing, communicating, and other physical functions, as necessary.
Salary Range
$50,000 - $55,000
