Blue Origin is Hiring an Engine Thermal Analyst II (R37993) Near Seattle, WA

This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security and human spaceflight.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will work within the Engines Thermal Analysis group among experts in heat transfer and flow network modeling. Growing your engineering knowledge and system understanding as you go, you will directly contribute to the design and qualification of the most advanced liquid rocket engines being developed today. You will participate in all stages of rocket engine development, from concept through detailed design and test support.

Your responsibilities might include building and evaluating large-scale assembly models suitable for quantifying subsystem interactions and ancillary component environments or performing detailed subcomponent finite element analyses to resolve local temperatures and gradients on valves, injectors, chambers, nozzles, thrusters, igniters, and related components. You will predict the thermal states of rocket engine components and assemblies through mission transients to aid performance and structural analyses, directly impacting engine performance and safety. Relying on your fundamentals in heat transfer, you will anchor thermal models to test data and make recommendations for updated instrumentation suites on subsequent test campaigns.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing and evaluating system-level and/or component-level thermal analysis models of rocket engines at varying levels of maturity and detail with supervision
  • Meticulous bookkeeping of model status and changes through time
  • Defining and anchoring thermal predictions of rocket engine components and assemblies to test data
  • Growing your knowledge and expertise by working with technical and professional mentors and by submitting your analyses to peer and expert review

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline is required
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience performing thermal/fluid analysis on liquid rocket engines or similar
  • Solid understanding of heat transfer, flow, and thermodynamic first principles
  • Experience with thermal analysis tools such as Thermal Desktop, SINDA/FLUINT, ANSYS Classic, ANSYS Workbench, or similar
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Good communication skills and proficiency with productivity tools
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in an engineering discipline with a focus on thermal or fluid sciences
  • Knowledge surrounding cryogens and phase change heat transfer
  • Prior experience in thermal/fluid testing and instrumentation definition

About Blue Origin

Blue Origin was founded in 2000 by Jeff Bezos with the vision to enable a future where millions of people are living and working in space to benefit Earth. Blue believes we must protect Earth by moving heavy industries that stress our planet into space, and enable humanity to access space to expand, explore, and find new energy and material resources. Then we can see a dynamic and abundant future for our grandchildrens grandchildren. There is no plan B for Earth. To enable this future, we must build a road to space to lower the cost of getting there. Blue is working on this today by developing... operationally reusable launch vehicles that are safe, reliable and highly available. Every launch vehicle is designed for human spaceflight from the beginning and able to ferry payloads to space. Join the mission to build a road to space - step by step ferociously. #GradatimFerociter More
