Bexar County is Hiring a Life & Safety Technician Near San Antonio, TX

Under general supervision, is responsible for the inspection, testing, maintenance, repair and certification of Bexar County fire alarm and sprinkler systems; ensures equipment certification is maintained in accordance with Federal, State and Local fire and safety requirements; and performs other duties as required.
  • Inspects, tests, and repairs fire alarm, emergency generator system and life and safety systems
  • Inspects, tests, and repairs fire sprinkler and standpipe systems
  • Inspects tests and makes minor repairs to the emergency generator system
  • Inspects and repairs battery backup emergency egress and lighting systems
  • Inspects and repairs emergency pneumatic release controls for jail cell doors
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repairs for life and safety systems
  • Performs fire safety code inspections in accordance with (National Fire Protection Association) Federal, State and local fire and safety requirements, Texas Juvenile Justice Department, Texas Commission on Jail Standards, TCEQ and other applicable agencies and accreditations such as the Medical Examiners Accreditation
  • May perform other maintenance duties as assigned
  • Provides information to operational and administrative personnel on life and safety systems operations
  • Maintains accurate testing records as required by regulatory agencies
  • Escorts contractors and Fire Marshal representatives through County buildings in order to maintain and/or inspect equipment
  • Records and maintains testing results, work order documentation to include preventive and corrective maintenance for life and safety equipment
  • Responsible for responding and assisting with elevator entrapments, perform testing of two-way emergency elevator communication systems as per code requirements
  • Assist with coordination and preparedness of fire drills, evaluating and recording results, and providing recommendations for improvement
  • Performs other duties as required
  • Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and four (4) years' experience applying and enforcing safety in the workplace, testing and repair of fire alarm and sprinkler systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Good knowledge of the testing, repair and certification of commercial building fire alarm and sprinkler systems; good knowledge of safety standards and practices. Knowledge of related tools and equipment
  • Skill in the utilization of all related tools and equipment
  • Ability to inspect, repair and maintain fire alarm and sprinkler systems; ability to operate assigned tools and testing equipment and basic office equipment; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to exercise independent judgment when necessary; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, and outside agencies/vendors
  • Must pass department Life and Safety aptitude test within one (1) year of employment and maintain passing score on future department testing issued periodically
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background check and clearance investigation
  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
  • When required, shall work extra hours, holidays, weekends and other shifts
  • Required to be on-call 24-hours a day
  • Required to work rotating shifts
  • Must have a valid state issued driver's license; and the ability to obtain a Texas Driver's License within 90 days of employment
  • Shall be familiar with OSHA Standards to enforce safe practices within the Facilities and Parks Department to include contractors and service providers
  • Shall have OSHA Standards, 10-hour training course
  • Must be able and willing to attend training at department's discretion
  • May be required to work in a jail environment
  • May be assigned to any or various county facilities
Working Conditions and Physical Demands: 
  • Working conditions are primarily indoors with occasional outdoor exposure
  • May be required to work in jail environment and/or juvenile probation and treatment facilities
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions
  • Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as damp/wet surfaces, extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, cramped areas, and/or loud noises
  • Frequently moves objects weighing up to 10-25 pounds
  • Occasionally moves objects weighing up to 50-75 pounds
  • Will frequently communicate with co-workers; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • Frequently moves about buildings
  • Constantly positions self to perform essential functions to include but not limited to stooping, crawling, kneeling, twisting, reaching, pushing, pulling and balancing
  • Constantly operates tools and equipment
