Baltimore County is Hiring a Recreation and Parks Therapeutic Recreation Assistant - Non-Merit (Rec and Parks Specialist) Near Towson, MD

Regular Schedule: 18 hours per week to 26 hours per week. 

A Non-Merit vacancy exist in the Department of Recreation and Parks. Non-Merit positions are not classified within the Baltimore County Government Classification and Compensation Plan.

Under the general supervision of a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Professional, is responsible for assessing the recreation and leisure needs for people with disabilities; ensure compliance with ADA regulations; provide inclusion support; and make necessary program modifications or accommodations for participation.
Essential Job Duties
  • Develops, promotes, and implements specialized and inclusive recreation programming.
  • Ensures proper building access and adaptive equipment are available for safe and interactive programs, services, and events.
  • Assist groups in planning and carrying out inclusive recreational programs.
  • Meet with the community citizens groups.
  • Supervise and train volunteer leaders.
  • Provide information, education, and assistance to community members and organizations.
  • Update and maintain electronic and physical files and/or records.
  • Create and design flyers, booklets, advertisement, brochures and/or reports.

Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent;

Prior experience working with people with disabilities and inclusive programming. Must possess skills necessary to instruct such activities.
 
Preferred Qualifications 
  • Experience planning, developing, and coordinating Therapeutic Recreation Programs.
  • Skill in and appreciation of specialized and inclusive recreation activities. 
  • Practical knowledge of the skill to be learned. 
  • Ability to work well with age group involved. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and accurately, both orally and writing. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. 
  • Knowledge of office procedures and filing systems. Knowledge of automated office systems
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Entry Level)
Must have sufficient skills in and appreciation of a variety of activities for all ages and abilities. Must have ability to deal with the interpersonal relationships of participants, staff, parents and the community at large. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
Licenses and Certificates
Some positions within this classification may require possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license at the time of appointment.Proof ofLicenses, Certifications and Education

EXAMINATION PROCEDUREQualified applicants will be assigned a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience as submitted on their application and supplemental questionnaire. Applicants are advised to state the dates, duties and responsibilities of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes. Employees hired after July 1, 2022 are required to participate in the Baltimore County Employees’ Retirement System, with very limited exceptions. 
Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this position entails frequent walking, standing, and other limited physical activity.
Employees in this classification may be assigned to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
