Job Purpose 
Under general supervision, performs maintenance and repair work to the physical structure of, and/or plumbing, electrical, mechanical, heating, and air conditioning systems and equipment in County correctional facilities.
 Essential Job Duties

• Performs general maintenance and routine repair throughout the facility.
• Operates, maintains, and performs routine repair to plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning, and ventilating systems and equipment for the facility.
• Performs routine carpentry, painting, or masonry tasks.
• Installs small kitchen and bathroom fixtures, appliances, and plumbing equipment.
• Repairs or replaces faucets and small pipes.
• Clears clogged drains, sewer and water lines.
• Makes repairs to wiring and controls. 
• Removes and replaces components in heating, air conditioning, or ventilating equipment. Installs and removes window units.
• Performs regular inspections of facilities and equipment.
• Assists skilled trades' workers with large or complex projects. Leads and instructs lesser skilled workers and/or inmates on a project basis.
• Uses building plans and sketches to perform work.
• Prepares lists of needed tools, equipment, and supplies.
• Keeps records of work performed, time required, and material used.
• Follows established security procedures and reports observed security infractions.
• Operates a vehicle to travel between job sites and to transport supplies and equipment.

Examples of Other Duties: 
May monitor or assist contractors. May assist with security or large cleanup operations in emergencies. Performs other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications
Four years' experience in building operation and maintenance work.
(Formal training or education related to building operation and maintenance may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.)
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
Character Requirement
Persons appointed to this classification must be of good moral character and emotionally stable as determined by a comprehensive background investigation and a drug test.
Proof of Licenses, Certifications and Education
Applicants are required to submit proof of licenses, certifications and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferred qualifications of the position. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant's major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.

Employees hired after July 1, 2022 are required to participate in the Baltimore County Employees’ Retirement System, with very limited exceptions. 

Persons appointed to this classification must attend correctional training courses offered by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission and other training as set forth by departmental policy. Employees are subject to call to duty and overtime in emergencies.
Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, climbing ladders, lifting and carrying of heavy objects, and the use of a full range of hand and power tools and equipment. Some duties require travel between work sites and/or exposure to hazardous conditions such as adverse weather, electricity, chemicals, and bio-hazards, such as body fluids and sewage. Work is performed in a fully operational correctional facility with all inherent hazards.
