Baltimore County is Hiring an Animal Services Medical Assistant Supervisor (Field Lead) - Non-Merit Near Towson, MD

Regular Schedule: 39 hours per week
A Non-Merit vacancy exists in the Animal Services Division, Bureau of Animal Services, Communicable Disease and Environmental Health, Department of Health and Human Services. 
Non-Merit positions are not classified within the Baltimore County Government Classification and Compensation Plan.

Proof of licenses, certifications, and/or education must be submitted with each application. Under general supervision, assists in leading and guiding a team of non-registered veterinary technicians, Registered Veterinary Technicians, Office Assistants, and other BCAS staff in the receipt, care, custody, protective activities and disposition of animals.
  • Establishes and monitors daily work schedules and prioritizes assignments.
  • Monitors schedule for surgery and assists in the daily operations of the animal shelter facility.
  • Assists medical supervisor in annual employee evaluations.
  • Provides medical (veterinary technician) assistance as needed within the surgical and vet exam rooms. 
  • Inputs and maintains medical records of veterinary services.
  • Assists and oversees euthanasia process.
  • Ensures that operations comply with shelter standards and other pertinent State and County laws and ordinances.
  • Keeps agency staff informed of shelter issues.
  • Monitors inventory for shelter, field and medical operations.
  • Works with BCAS Purchasers to place orders, receive in and stock goods, distribute to all program locations. 
  • Monitors for over use or over stocking of goods within all BCAS programs.
  • Works directly with Assistant Supervisor for Shelter operations to assure medical/shelter rounds are completed and animals are moving within the shelter system in an efficient manner.
Examples of Other Duties
  • Performs typing, word processing and use of excel spreadsheets.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid non-commercial, class C Maryland Driver's license or an equivalent is required at the time of appointment.
Proof of Licenses, Certifications and Education
Applicants are required to submit proof of licenses, certifications and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferred qualifications of the position. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant's major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

Proof of Degree Equivalency

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.Required Qualifications
Possession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent
Plus 
Four years' experience in humane animal care and treatment, a veterinary medical environment, animal shelter operations, and/or animal husbandry, two year of which must have been in a lead worker or supervisory capacity.
Preferred Qualifications 
Experience as a lead worker or in a supervisory capacity.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level)
  • Knowledge of humane animal care, treatment and shelter operations.
  • Knowledge of laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to animal protection and control.
  • Knowledge of County and department rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the care, treatment and handling of animals
  • Ability to lead others
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to complete and maintain files, records and forms.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff and citizens.
Licenses or Certifications
Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
Certification approved by the Maryland Board of Veterinary Examiners in the performance of euthanasia is required within one year of appointment.

Examination Procedure

Employees hired after July 1, 2022 are required to participate in the Baltimore County Employees’ Retirement System, with very limited exceptions. 

Employees must obtain certification approved by the Maryland Board of Veterinary Examiners in the performance of euthanasia within one year of employment.
 
Persons appointed to this classification work on a rotating schedule which includes weekends, holidays, and overtime.
 
Employees are subject to call to duty.
 
Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification may entail the performance of physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying animals, and the operation of vehicles and equipment.
Work requires exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as rabid animals, adverse weather, traffic, cleaning supplies and disgruntled members of public or animal owners.
Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation
Applicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education certification and fingerprinting checks.
 
May be required to complete an expanded background investigation, polygraph examination, and psychological examination.
