Atomic Machines is Hiring a Technical Program Manager Near Santa Clara, CA

Our mission at Atomic Machines is to bring autonomous bits-to-atoms manufacturing of anything at any scale to the world, and we are well on our way. We are developing an entirely new class of manufacturing foundry for micro- and nano-scale machines, and we are using that foundry to create products the world has heretofore been unable to build. Our first device has exceptionally strong and large-scale product-market fit: it is both iconic of what our platform can do and a driver of very significant enterprise scale.

Joining forces with us means becoming part of an incredibly talented, inventive and passionate multi-disciplinary team running hard to make our platform, devices and vision a reality. You will have the opportunity to help define the company from its earliest days. You’ll be challenged to learn and grow as a builder and a leader as the company itself grows rapidly. And you will receive significant equity compensation - you’ll truly be a company owner and benefit financially from our overall success.

Our offices are located in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to join our growing team. This role will contribute to the foundational design of our novel robotic manufacturing platform by developing significant subsystems responsible for the conversion of as-delivered materials to a format compatible with the custom manufacturing platform we are developing. You will gain multidisciplinary experience across manufacturing engineering, mechanical design, electrical engineering, vision, robotics, and while working as a part of a fast-paced cross-functional team in an early startup.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the development effort for our AMP Platform.
  • Map the business objectives to the technology development effort and work with the AMP team to ensure business objectives are achieved, including: schedule, device cost, capital costs, yield, and scaling (throughput and, later, latency).
  • Work with the design team to follow the Atomic Machines development process, including preparing for and participating in gate review meetings.
  • Facilitate cross-functional communication and problem solving.
  • Identify critical points of multi-person collaboration and ensure those collaborations occur and achieve desired outcomes.
  • Understand and manage technical dependencies across subsystems, cross-node requirements, and systemic technical concerns.
  • Work with the team to establish clear requirements and roadmaps for individual areas and the system as a whole.
  • Plan and lead FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) work for Nodes and subsystems.
  • Act as scrum master for sprint planning, reviews and retrospectives.
  • Develop, update and publish schedules for each phase of development.
  • Coordinate with other program managers and upper management to ensure programs are not blocked by other programs.
  • Efficiently manage/participate in design discussions.
  • Identify and understand technical gaps or risks that need to be addressed.
  • Work with outside parties including customers, suppliers, and contract manufacturers with minimal aid from engineers.
  • Participate in supplier selection for potential Contract Manufacturers (CMs) by providing expert evaluation of the CM’s program management capabilities.
  • Establish a shared plan (between CM and AM) that (1) starts with early DFM feedback from CM, (2) gets CM engaged in building alpha/beta builds and (3) culminates in production builds by CM on schedule, cost, and Service Level Agreements.
  • Support engineering teams in implementing and following release processes, engineering changes, and configuration management.
  • Develop internal processes to support Quality Management System and to satisfy customer and ISO audits.
What you'll need
  • At least a BS mechanical engineering (EE or CS are acceptable alternatives).
  • 5 years of nontrivial experience as a hands-on engineer, designing and building complex systems.
  • 5 years of experience in a significant role as a Technical Program Manager for complex integrated products with electronic/software control from NPI (new product introduction) to commercial release (and beyond, ideally).
  • Must be sufficiently technical to have efficient and rich conversations with the engineering team. Ideally, you will have a deep academic background in mechanical, electrical and/ or software engineering.
  • Experience managing at least one project where either
  • The mechanical engineering aspects involved more than just static structures like chambers, casings, etc., but additionally involved moving mechanical parts, kinematics, motion control, etc. Ideally high-precision motion control, sensing, closed feedback loops, complex hardware/software interactions.
  • The software integration aspects involved deploying either an embedded system that drives real hardware in a control loop, or a platform system that deployed a new functionality, into use and maintaining of such functionality.
  • Engaged deeply in technical work, not just an administrator.
  • At least an understanding of (if not direct experience using) agile methodologies and able to intelligently articulate how to approach building hardware using agile.
  • Experience releasing products to manufacturing following a defined process.
  • Excellent communication skills - articulate, concise/crisp, high signal-to-noise ratio.
