Americans for Responsible Innovation is Hiring a Policy Analyst Near Washington, DC

About Us

Americans for Responsible Innovation (ARI) is a new nonprofit organization dedicated to policy advocacy in the public interest for emerging technology, including artificial intelligence (AI). We believe in establishing a thoughtful governance framework for rapidly advancing technologies that recognizes the importance of safety while continuing to foster innovation.

The organization is currently small, but expects to grow to a team of 8-10 staff by the end of 2024. Our goal is to become one of the major players influencing AI policy.

ARI was founded in late 2023 by Brad Carson, a former member of Congress, and Eric Gastfriend, a tech entrepreneur. Our SVP of Government Affairs is a former Senate Chief of Staff.

Compensation

Salary: $85,000 - $95,000, commensurate with experience.

ARI covers 85% of healthcare, vision, and dental insurance premiums.

About the job

ARI’s mission is to help U.S. policymakers develop a thoughtful governance framework for rapidly advancing technologies that protects the public from harm while continuing to foster innovation. To succeed in this mission, we need a knowledgeable and detail-oriented policy analyst to curate, analyze, and communicate the best policy proposals developed by a broad range of actors including think tanks, universities, congressional offices, executive branch agencies, and international bodies.
The person in this role will be responsible for conducting in-depth research into potential policy proposals for ARI, maintaining ARI’s working knowledge of existing policy research for consideration, and coordinating ARI’s work with think tanks and other advocacy organizations. The person in this role will also serve as a technical expert with policymakers and other important stakeholders.

The right candidate for this role will have a deep expertise in AI policy, superior writing ability, and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with a range of experts. The right candidate need not have a technical AI background, but must have a strong grasp on the details, strengths, and potential shortcomings of the various AI policy proposals likely to be under consideration by Congress and federal agencies now and in the near future.

This role reports directly to the Senior Vice President of Government Affairs. ARI staff follow a hybrid schedule, with in-person work expected two to three days per week. Remote work is possible and acceptable on days when in-person presence is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Stay on top of (a) AI progress, (b) the relevant academic literature, and (c) AI policy conversations happening in and around DC
  • Help the ARI team develop, refine, and communicate ARI’s policy goals
  • Prepare detailed analysis and recommendations of potential AI policy priorities for ARI to champion
  • Draft summaries of proposed legislation, executive branch actions, and policy briefs
  • Conduct research and draft memoranda to help prepare ARI staff for meetings with Members of Congress and congressional staff
  • Conduct in-depth policy research on policy proposals and stay up-to-date on policy proposals prepared by leading think tanks in the space
  • Closely track and analyze all proposed legislation and executive branch actions regarding AI; maintain familiarity with state-level and international proposals regarding AI
  • Track AI policy news and alert ARI leadership of major developments that have not been widely reported
  • Other tasks outside of policy, as needed – we’re a small team and we all need to wear many hats

About you

You may be a good fit for this career opportunity, if you have:

  • A Bachelor’s or graduate degree in a related field (e.g. Public Policy)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent research skills
  • Superior writing ability
  • Humility that you don’t have all the answers and are excited to work with numerous collaborators
  • Experience helping experts engage in non-academic processes
  • Comfort working in a political arena
  • Passion for the responsible development of AI and emerging technology.
  • Alignment with ARI’s mission and values
  • Reputation for trustworthiness and integrity
  • Comfort working in a dynamic early startup environment that lacks the stability and structure of a more established organization
  • Optional: Technical background in AI/ML

We value and celebrate diversity and strive to create an inclusive work environment for all. We welcome applicants of all kinds and are committed to providing an equal opportunity process.
