Compensation and Benefits

$56,000 – $70,000 | Salary is negotiable dependent upon experience.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance, the Tax and Compliance Accountant is responsible for preparing tax payments, returns, and registrations for the organization. Additionally, this role will be responsible for supporting the overall tax compliance function of the organization and special projects as assigned. This position requires a solid foundation in accounting principles and tax rules and regulations, as well as excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work independently as well as within a team.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare the necessary paperwork for tax payments and returns. Complete quarterly and annual tax reports. Recommend tax strategies that align with business goals.
  • Provide periodic reports to senior management and board committees on industry trends, state of the compliance programs, and the status of key initiatives. Share financial data with the Finance team and management.
  • Work closely with Internal Audit to evaluate and implement internal controls and best practices. Properly document all internal controls and evaluate effectiveness.
  • Liaise with internal and external auditors. Coordinate outsourced tax preparation work. Prepare and process Form 1099s for vendors.
  • Work cohesively with Internal Audit to identify potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk across the organization, making improvement recommendations where needed.
  • Work cohesively with Internal Audit to manage, develop, and improve compliance training, ensuring dissemination of training and monitor compliance of training requirements. Contribute to the development and improvement of audit and accounting processes and procedures to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Research local/state tax rate changes related to Payroll. Complete state 501c state registrations for new hires. Monitor and respond to tax authority communications.
  • Research/create state, local, SUTA, and School District Tax rate changes and update within the payroll system. Maintain compliance with state TPA submissions by working closely with Payroll for submittal to Paycom.
  • Submit POAs to newly created state tax accounts as well as other required documentation.
  • Partner with Operations, Systems Administration, etc. to ensure continual improvement of compliance monitoring systems, processes, and oversight.
  • Comply with annual and charitable reporting requirements.
  • Assist in administration of registration and compliance processes with numerous state, county, and local jurisdictions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Education, Training, and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in accounting.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of related experience and 3–4 years in nonprofit required, or equivalent combination of education and experience in the above listed responsibilities.
  • Must possess excellent analytical skills and a sound understanding of accounting principles. Accounting experiences in not-for-profit, government, or manufacturing environments are preferable.
  • Thorough understanding of current tax laws, rules, and regulations. Comprehensive understanding of tax return processes and regulations.
  • Ability to maintain flexibility, managing multiple timelines and projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be motivated, a problem-solver, and can use independent judgement in decision-making.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish & maintain effective working relationships across departments and seniority levels while also being able to work independently.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with a dedication to accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic, maintaining confidentiality and integrity.
