American Jewish Committee is Hiring a Remote Assistant Director of Academic Affairs

Founded in 1906, AJC seeks to enhance the well-being of the Jewish people and Israel, and to advance human rights and democratic values in the United States and around the world. Among Jewish advocacy organizations, AJC is the leader in the global arena. We are known for our unparalleled access to diplomats, government officials, and faith leaders in more than 100 countries. In addition to our New York headquarters and Office of Policy and Diplomatic Affairs in Washington, D.C., AJC has offices across the U.S. and around the globe and maintains partnerships with Jewish communities worldwide.

The Contemporary Jewish Life Department (CJL) oversees AJC’s educational and Jewish peoplehood initiatives, including:

  • Confronting antisemitism and anti-Israel activity on campus through work with university presidents and other administrators, DEI departments, students, and alumni;
  • Confronting antisemitism and anti-Israel activity in k-12 schools through work with heads of school and other administrators, DEI departments, students, and parents;
  • Empowering young Jews to be advocates, including through AJC’s LFT (Leaders for Tomorrow) high school program, Campus Global Board, and other Jewish communal programs;
  • Educating the Jewish community in general, and specifically AJC’s lay leaders, about Jewish identity, Jewish history, Israel, and antisemitism through programs and initiatives including Jewish American Heritage Month, educational sessions and training.
  • Working to foster close Israel-Diaspora relations.

The Assistant Director of Academic Affairs will work closely with AJC’s Director of Academic Affairs to assist with strategic engagement on university campuses nationwide, a portfolio that currently includes both crisis response and proactive work with administrators and faculty. Along with the Director of Academic Affairs, the Assistant Director at AJC will focus on maintaining and expanding AJC’s campus relationships, and will work in tandem with AJC’s student-facing and k-12 education team. The ideal candidate will be familiar with academic environments, including DEI spaces, able to work collaboratively in a team atmosphere, and able to keep pace with a fast-moving environment.

The Assistant Director of Academic Affairs does all of this while adhering to AJC’s core values: Respect, Teamwork, Integrity, Excellence, and Accountability.

Responsibilities include:

  • Under the leadership of AJC’s senior education staff, help maintain and expand AJC’s network of relationships with administrators and faculty at esteemed academic institutions.
  • Ability to engage with university administrators across a range of subject areas, including designated diversity, equity, and inclusion spaces.
  • Contribute content to AJC’s educational initiatives and help deliver educational instruction to university administrators and staff.
  • Help coordinate and assist with carrying out large-scale AJC projects including the University Presidents Summit, academic delegations to Israel, and inter-group partnership initiatives.
  • Assist with AJC’s outreach and engagement with university alumni and parent groups.
  • Work closely with other AJC education staff, including student-facing Campus Affairs staff, to help coordinate and execute campus-focused projects.
  • Ability to speak clearly and effectively to lay audiences and members of the community about AJC’s campus work.
  • Ability to multi-task and work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively with a strong sense of teamwork, as well as independently.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum educational requirement: M.A. or M.Ed. We will also give consideration to strong candidates who hold B.A./B.Ed. degrees who have relevant professional experience in education, policy work, or Jewish advocacy
  • 5 to 7 years of relevant experience
  • Familiarity with academic environments is required, particularly diversity, equity, and inclusion spaces.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Alignment with AJC’s mission and diplomatic style, with knowledge and passion for the organization’s key issues (Israel, world Jewry, human rights, international relations, foreign policy, and democratic institutions).
  • Strong background and understanding of issues related to Jewish identity, Israel and antisemitism.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a highly collaborative environment.

Benefits:

Comprehensive benefits package includes:

  • Medical, vision, and dental plans
  • Flexible Spending Account options
  • Generous Paid Time Off (PTO) - 15 vacation days per year, that increases with continued employment
  • Paid Holidays (many Federal and major Jewish Holidays)
